Snagged - Ruined
Snagged is a New York based band that, in their own words "have a very unique sound bringing the 90's grunge and 70's classic rock sound together with a new age melodic power rock". That's quite the description. I'm not exactly sure what "new age melodic power rock" is but if it's Snagged then it really isn't half bad. Quite often when I get these self-done albums they are lacking in polish but Snagged seem to have got that covered. The production might need a little work or it might just be mastering. It seems that there isn't quite the warmness that these power rock bands should have.
Anyway, onto the actual music. About half of the songs on their Ruined album are really decent. The album starts out giving you a false impression that Snagged is a ska oriented band with "Fallen Angel". The lead singer sounds slightly like the singer of TV On The Radio. That is the only similarity though. It's a decent song as well. I actually liked "RV" with it's predictable use of the waa waa pedal.
The other half seem overly simplistic. I'm not a good guitar player but I think I could probably work out the instrumental "Fall Of Icarus". "Final Hour" on the other hand, is quite an accomplishment.
Ruined is a great first album for an amateur group. The band will need to work on polishing up it's sound and getting a little further advanced in the song creation. Most of the songs on this album follow quite a template. I would imagine this band would be one of those great bands to see down at your local watering hole.
