The Delgados are one of Scotland’s great undiscovered gems that is just waiting for that perfect moment to launch into mainstream music. Well, maybe not. It seems as though The Delgados are quite happy with the underground success that they have achieved with amazing albums like The Great Eastern. In fact, The Great Eastern was one of the best albums to ever come out of Scotland. Now, with the release of Hate right around the corner, what can the great Degados be thinking? In March 2001, the band were invited to provide a live soundtrack to the art show of Joe Coleman. His specialty is that of serial killers, side-show freaks, blood, sperm and violence. Very light hearted (sic). It was the first time that they band had written in collaborative effort. They liked it. So out of that came Hate. Alan Woodward (guitar/vocals) says “Hate is all around but, in the end, love is the only thing that will save your life. Words of wisdom from a very talented musician. So while Hate is the subject of this Delgados album, it comes off sounding fairly light-hearted. The band went back to David Fridman who masterfully produces The Great Eastern. Fridman left most of the tracks alone. Said they were perfect. While I still have a place in my heart for the Great Eastern, Hate is growing on me. Hate is good.
