Absolutely gorgeous, surprisingly influential and rarely overrated. "God Only Knows" would also make it into my top five songs of all time.

kev is correct, the influence this album and the Beach Boys had on indie rock, and rock in general, is phenomenal. You can hear it throughout Pet Sounds, specifically on tracks like "God Only Knows" and "Sloop John B". "God Only Knows" might be my favorite song of all time, if I had to narrow it down to 5 or so it would be in there. The arrangements and atmospheres Brian Wilson was working with, along with the creative edge the band began developing over time, would serve as blueprints for a myriad of bands, and continues to do so to this day. Pet Sounds was their best effort, and one that will always remain amongst the most influential and highly underrated efforts in music history, as far as I'm concerned.

I feel that this album needs to be on the website. It is so incredibly influential and is often overlooked, or scoffed at being in the scope of one of the best records ever (because the Beach Boys can be mocked for their early, surf-rock, one dimensional Cali- music). But really, the harmonies on this album are incredible; every song stands out as a masterpiece of its own, with the ever popular ditty "Wouldn't It Be Nice," and my personal favorite, "God Only Knows," which exemplifies Brian Wilson's extremely melancholic lyricism, revealing his abilities as a song-writer as well as a singer. The whole album is tied togethre conceptually, too, which was unique for its time and paved the way for further concept-based music, which is all too popular today.

I love this album so much, and as the summer comes up I plan to play it day in and day out. Don't let preconceptions steer you away from this one; I promise it is worth your listening.
