Islands - Arm's Way
You wouldn't have any idea that Nick Thorburn was in the eclectic Unicorns after hear the latest from Islands. Arm's Way is a big production feast and it works well in almost every aspect.
The only thing I found was that the some of the songs seemed to be lacking in soul slightly. Tracks like "Pieces Of You" are quite adventurous but seem to be flawed. It's almost like Nick was reaching a little out of Arm's reach. But then on the track "Kids Don't Know Shit" the group tends to turn my opinion around. They follow that up with "Life In Jail" which is a heartbreakingly honest song that has a delightful arrangement, with a clever change-up in the middle. I also enjoyed the fast pace of "Abominable Snow".
After a few dedicated listens, Arm's Way tends to latch onto you best senses and delve within your better judgement. This album is quite lengthy compared to their self-titled debut. But I found, taken in pieces, Arm's Way could be digested just fine. Maybe not an improvement on the debut but no worse and many would consider this heading down a different route.
