One cannot deny the influence that Tanya Donelly has had on alternative music. As a founding member of three of the most prominent bands of the 90’s (Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly) she pretty much paved the way for female artists in the college music scene. Now that she is making the return to 4AD records for her second solo album she is complete pumped and excited. As usual, Tanya is all over the map with upbeat pop tracks and dark and brooding ballads (“Moonbeam Monkey). Her voice on “Another Moment sounds simply seductive as only Donelly can sound. The arrangements on Beauty Sleep are some of her strongest to date. She seems to have lost some of her jangle that made her band Belly so popular but that is just the sign of an artist moving on and trying new things. After taking a few years off, Tanya is sounding even more fresh and exciting than ever. There is no reason why any previous fan wouldn’t take as much out of Beauty Sleep as one of Donelly’s Belly albums. And there is no reason why Tanya wouldn’t see a whole new slew of fans with this 4AD release.
