I had heard Gruff had many projects on the go but this one slipped my radar. Loved Candylion.

Bizarre! I'm always glad to see random artist tie-ups. Often such relationships can throw up some truly original work. And this is no exception.....
I dont think many would have paired Avant-garde Hiphop pioneer Boom Bip with Gruff Rhys of the Super Furry Animals. On paper it sounds ridiculous. And thankfully in reality it IS ridiculous. This is without a doubt the ONLY 80s-synth fuelled 12 track opera about John Delorean's doomed Delorean Motor Car venture and subsequent DEA entrapment case in my collection!! (Delorean made the car featured in Back to the Future)
I'd love to have heard the initial phone call.... "yeah, its like an opera..... about an 80s car manufacturer...... made on synths.... but with some hiphop, some 50s crooning, some 80s synth ballads, some depeche modeness, some flaming lippery, some electro and a load of guitars..... CLICK! BRRRRRRRRRRRRR" lol
Anyway, it's more than a little bit interesting. As a fan of the rougher end of the sound spectrums I'm surprised i liked it at all! Some good songs, fantastic fun and cheered me up no end on a dull scottish afternoon. a proper smiler. The 80s angle could have gone so wrong but they carry it off with some authentic period shoulder pad swagger
i would try and describe it to you but i cant. iIn concept it sits alongside Gorillaz. but in sound, quality and longevity terms it's nowhere near Damon Albarn's twaddle.its so many things but none of them at the same time. wierd as....
Check the below link for a Boom Bip mixtape of tracks that were no doubt part of their inspiration. Also very enjoyable. Nice to find something so crafted take itself so lightly.
This will be my ONLY happy review. I'm usually a right miserable bastard!
