This album came across my path a couple of years ago and has really never lost interest with me. Afro Celt Sound System is basically an extension of the already amazing Shooglenifty. They have the likes of Ronan Browne (uilleann pipes, flute, harmonium), James McNally (bodhran, accordian), the amazing Davy Spillane (uilleann pipes, low whistle), and a whole slew of other musicians. When you get that many brilliant musicians together collaborating on one project you can either have complete failure or complete success; Afro Celt Sound System ended up being the latter. This was the debut album (as if you couldn't tell from the "Volume 1" in the title) and they have a second album out of equal brilliance. The sound on Sound Magic really is like nothing you have ever heard before. They meld classic celtic with African beats and rhythms as well as lyrics at some junctures. In the music store I used to work in we would put on Afro Celt and instantly sell a bunch of them. It's one of those albums you don't realize you need until you give it a listen.
