This one caught me off guard. This is where tireless promoters should be thanked. I get so much shit in my inbox everyday talking up bands and artists that I start to tune out to many of them. There was a follow-up email about Lykke Li with a link to "Dance Dance Dance" from this EP and I clicked it more out of boredom than anything and was instantly impressed. I proceeded to rifle through my stack of promos to track down this EP and this is the resulting review of an EP that could have easily been dismissed.
Lykke Li is a Swedish singer/songwriter that is only 22 years old. Little Bit is an EP introduction to a wonderful export that I feel lucky to have come across. It is meant to be a teaser for the upcoming full-length Youth Novels. It's strange to have such lushness on an album and yet be so subdued. The chemistry that Lykke tends to have with the musicians is so apparent and it makes her pop songs that much warmer. Bjorn and John from Peter, Bjorn and John take on the production as well as many of the instruments.
This four song EP starts out with the fun title track. The instrumentation just makes Lykke's voice that much more elegant. The track that caught my attention is "Dance, Dance, Dance". Think of the first time you heard Bjork or Fiest. This is the sort of feeling I got with this lovely understated pop song. "Everybody But Me" is a slower song but almost as good as the first two. Lykke takes on more of a narrator type role in this one. I found her voice to be a little too far down in the mix. Charming still, but could have been slightly better. The last of the four songs is "Time Flies", and one on which Lykke sings in a voice so whispy that you think it is going to crack at any time but it doesn't. She loses me a bit on this one but still I am anticipating the full-length later this year.
