Beautifully crafted moody dark brazillian samba covers of post-punk and new-wave classics. such a bizarre concept that most tracks take on a life of their own and bare little or no resemblance to their jittery edgy originals.
Nouvelle Vague (french(?) for New Wave, get it?) are a British and French production duo who arranged and produce a succession of super sexy sounding (mainly) french session singers that sound like they've been ripped straight out of a dingey underground Paris Jazz club and dropped into Rio and they're not very happy about it.
Covers of "Guns Of Brixton" (The Clash) and "I Melt With You" (Modern English) drift along with a french swagger edith piaf would be proud of and "Friday Night, Saturday" morning's juxtaposition of sultry silky sexy vocals recalling the night before's fighting and puking is surreally beautiful.
"Just Cant Get enough" (Depeche Mode), "A Forest" (The Cure) and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (Joy Division) all get the same metamorphic makeover treatment.
Strangely the only track i dont like on this album is conversely one of my favourites in it's original state - the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks"
All in all a very unique project that by and large throws up some serious questions about musical presentation. Seemingly similarly minded originals are transformed here into many different moods
