Most will consider the self-titled Suicidal Tendencies debut album to be the definitive and most classic of ST's output but I prefer the more metal edged How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today. You could see Mike Muir and the boys headed this way with their sophomore album, Join The Army but it was this one where they hit full stride. Yes, this album is 20 years old now but it still stands the test of time.
This album opens so strongly with "Trip At The Brain", a furiously paced song. Then Mike states that he's "Hearing Voices" which is great metal track with some fun and easy riffs for you kids to learn. After that, it's time to "Pledge Your Allegiance" to the Suicidal army. This is a song that has turned into their signature song. But my favorite track on here is the title track. If you only listen one song, check this one out. Don't miss out on the simple but catchy "Surf and Slam" or the darker "If I Don't Wake Up". It could be new guitarist Mike Clark style of simple metal riffs that throws this one into the stratosphere. A new direction = a metal/punk classic.
If you have never checked in with Suicidal Tendencies, this is the perfect place to jump in. Controlled by Hatred / Feel Like Shit...Deja Vu and The Art Of Rebellion are both great albums as well but for first timers, check out How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today. It will put a smile on your face.
