Remember immature, playful, mildly amusing pop punk from the late 1990s? The lyrics were always based on a thirteen year-olds perspective of sex, the vocals were sung in an exaggerated California surfer accent. Well, that’s what The Naked Apes are doing ten years late on their album Something in My Genes. It annoyed me in the fourth grade, and it annoys me even more now. Lyrical content includes odes to being “wasted again,” which details waking up the stereotypical morning after and realizing you’ve slept with an overweight girl (which, as we all remember from middle school, is a fate worse than death). Song titles include “Party Naked,” “Life’s a Beach, Then You Dive,” “Grow Up,” and “If You See Kay.” Say that last one slowly, out loud, and carefully to get the hilarity behind that gem. There’s no shortage of humor here, but Something in My Genes is punching a horse that was more aptly beaten to death by Blink-182 on Enema of the State. The Naked Apes aren’t bad, but if you’re listening to them past the age of fourteen, it’s time to move on.
