It's been quite some time since I have checked in with the former American Music Club front man. In fact the last album I listened to from Mark was his amazing 1997 album West. Music For Courage & Confidence came across my desk and a remembered what made Mr. Eitzel so intriguing and interesting. It's all about his low-key, almost whisper of a voice. There is no better venue for that than an album of covers and that's just what Mark provides with this album. He picks some interesting songs to cover like starting out the album with Anne Murray's "Snowbird" and moving right into Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine". Don't expect upbeat versions of these songs because if you know anything about Mark Eitzel you will know that his music is more comfortable late night in a smoky bar, along with a cigar and a single-malt. Starting off with "Snowbird" really sets the pace for the album. Some other notables on the album are "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me", "I Only Have Eye's For You", a great version of "Gentle On My Mind" (Glenn Campbell), and Phil Ochs' "Rehearsals For Retirement". If you like covers projects, Music For Courage & Confidence will wow you. And Eitzel fans will really get a kick out of these tracks.
