Pop Up is fun, retro, and in French. As a result, I have overlooked the foreign lyrics for the very electro-pop sounds that this album has to offer. Yelle relies on her simple yet strong vocals to successfully balance out the big beats and synthesizers that are used heavily on this record. Her occasional French slurring also adds a sassy effect on tracks such as "Dans Ta Vraie Vie." Tied altogether with her coy chanting abilities, Yelle has overall created 12 tracks of very enjoyable dance tunes. Despite the French nature of these songs, I was able to recall the names of each and put a title to every unique combination of rhythm and melody. The beats are very memorable.
Nonetheless, simple bubbly music is all that this album is. It does not try to be challenging or complicated. However, although she merely sticks to what she knows, she does it very well and with overflowing energy.
Electro-pop is usually not my preferred nature of music, but thanks to Yelle, I have adopted a new appreciation for French artists who make dance music. With Pop Up on full blast, do not be alarmed if you start discovering dance moves that you never knew existed within you.
