It's always a shame to find out about an amazing band after they have broken up. It's even more of a tragedy when the band did not get the recognition or fame that they deserve. That is the unfortunate story of Paper Rival. I recently discovered this band upon receiving a mix CD with the tracks Swimmer King and Bluebird. Upon hearing these two songs, I knew that there was something special about Paper Rival. With most bands, the more you listen to Paper Rival the more you become attached to them.
While there are some songs that I could personally do without, I still believe that they offer something very special to the entire mix of the album. The lyrics to each song of Dialog are so meaningful. After comprehending them and then listening to the songs, you find that more than the regular emotions are stirred up. Not only that, but you can actually feel the emotion and passion coming from your speakers as the vocalists sing to you.
I recommend the tracks Foreign Film Collection, Bluebird, Keep Us In, and An Easy Belief. This album is something you can find yourself coming back to time and time again, gaining a deeper understanding and connection with each listen.

The most memorable albums are the ones that just keep getting better and better with each listen. Paper Rival's Dialog is similar to one of the best hidden secrets in modern rock; any listener willing to give it a try will develop a gradual love for it.
The record separates itself from other alternative rock records through its poignant songwriting. The band's first single "Cassandra" is a musical self-reflection highlighted by guitars, drums, and background strings. Additionally, frontman Jacob Rolleston has quite the range in vocal abilities. He can summon goose bumps onto the skin with his lingering audible whisper for melodic ballads, and he can also deliver a solid rocker voice for the catchier tunes.
With the occasional appearance of instruments like the sleigh bells in "An Easy Belief," the album is essentially driven by the guitar and drums. Through Dialog, Paper Rival experiences with the different types of energetic ballads and lush rock melodies. Whether it be the guitar hooks or the haunting choruses, the songs all carry distinctive characteristics that make them more and more endearing every time they are in rotation. With each solid listen to this album, I find something new that I like about the way it has all come together.
