Coffins are a thrash/death metal trio from Japan that keeps it simple. Monster riffs repeated for bludgeoning effect, the occasional prog-interlude within guitar solos, and, always, the low-lonesome growl. There is nothing new here, but if you like the genre, there is much to satisfy.
"Cadaver Blood" and "Altars in Gore" feature non-standard bazooka riffs that are based on death metal, but have a bit more drone to them. Guitarist/vocalist Uchino (as distinguished from bassist Koreeda, who handles "screams") is clearly the one entrusted to provide the inspirational moments. Even on tracks that could jump the shark like "Mortification To Ruin" or "The Frozen Styx" are saved by his inspired playing. The drummer, the ingeniously named You, provides a constant cement-based bottom throughout.
"Buried Death" is a cool, eight song slab of predictable but satisfying, with enough inspired touches to help it rise occasionally above the genre's familiar template.
