Cute Is What We Aim For - Rotation
There is a question that many of bands struggle with, "How do we follow up our wildly successful debut?" Many bands choose to change their sound and call it "maturing" which in many cases results in a loss of fans other bands make a carbon copy of the first album which causes them to be criticized. As for Cute Is What We Aim For, well they decided to stay true to their fans while still maturing and putting out a quality album. Now your question is "Is their new album, Rotation, as good as their 2006 debut?" My answer to you is.....(drumroll) YES.
Cute Is What We Aim For some what ditched their old style of song which was catchy hook after catchy hook. On Rotation the lyrics seem more mature, maybe not as catchy but they seem to have a deeper meaning than before. As for their musicianship, well that also got better, while still maintaining that high level of energy they had on the first album. End result they no longer sound like they are only targeting teenage girls (Let it be known that i dug their first album that is just how it sounded). The first song of the set is a perfect choice. Entitled "Practice Makes Perfect" they make it clear they have been practicing. With lyrics like "I've become what a mother wouldn't want in a son," they make it clear that they have matured. Along with this songs such as; "Doctor," "Do What You Do," and "Hollywood" the band has put together a damn good second album. Cute Is What We Aim For has not disappointed Rotation is worth your attention. There is no slump here give it a chance and you might just be surprised at what you find.
