This is going to be a tough review because the last Flashing Lights was one of the best albums to have ever come out of Canada. Sweet Release is the Flashing Lights second album and as you all know, the sophomore album is the toughest of any bands career. It proves so hard in fact that lead Light disbanded the Super Friendz after their second album. Let’s hope this isn’t the case for the Flashing Lights. Sweet Release starts off super strong with “Been Waiting, a great driving pop track that kicks Sweet Release off to a fine start. Then you get the retro feeling “Same Thing Twice which fits the groove nicely. Sweet Release is an album filled with some hidden gems but there are some snoozers on here. For instance “Since They Were Crowned is lacking a bit in the creative department as well as the delivery area. If the Flashing Lights debut was not so masterful in every aspect then Sweet Release would be a much easier pill to swallow. As it is, Sweet Release will appeal to FL fans but will unlike gain any new ones.
