Harvey Milk has been getting a lot of choice press for their new album, Life...The Best Game In Town. This isn't a new band, but one that has been around since the early 90s. They broke up in 1998 but in 2005 they decided to have one more kick at the cat. This is their second album since reforming and arguably their best as well.

The tumultuous opener, "Death Goes To The Winner" gives the listener an idea of how thick and muddy this band can sound. They build on what bands like The Melvins have given them for building blocks and go even further. At about 5 minutes in feedback starts washing over top of the heavy rhythm but then Creston Spiers vocals start in to usher you to a timely death, ending the track with a Beatles tribute. You might want to call Harvey Milk stoner rock but sludge metal might be a better hole to toss them.

We get a display of their musical dexterity on the furious instrumental "After All I've Done For You, This Is How Your Repay Me?".

Then with "Motown" they get all like-able on us with what could possibly be a hit if anyone cared. But then they dive right back into mischief with "A Maelstrom of Bad Decisions". This is an impressive album with a lot of great surprises thrown in. "Roses" being one of them.

No, Harvey Milk is not for everyone but I think Life...The Best Game in Town will find it's way into a lot of people who wouldn't expect to like something in this genre. Give it a shot.
