The Wannabe Hasbeens are solid contributors to modern alternative rock. With six tracks on their EP “Former Trans Future Vol. 1,” the band shows versatility. The opening track “Call Your Bluff” hints at the influence of 80’s rock with loud volume, but the next song “Gimme’ Substance” releases a much more angsty vibe complete with catchy chants. The Wannabe Hasbeens then throws a twist by showing a poppier side with “Hey, George Bailey,” another melody with a taste of 80’s rock. “Clean” demonstrates the softer personality of the band as it boasts big drum beats and a dreamy atmosphere accomplished with distorted guitars. The musicianship of the Wannabe Hasbeens is not all that unique, as variants of the band’s aims can be heard through many other groups that are also currently being graced with airtime. However, their songwriting capabilities are notable as well as very distinguishable. The intricately worded narrative to each song is powerful, and it is evident that a lot of effort has been put into each word. “Former Trans Future Vol. 1” is rich in volume and attitude. The music, although not quite distinctive, succeeds at being angsty and pounding, while the lyrics and the emotions behind them deserve much praise. Overall, The Wannabe Hasbeens have made a solid record that can easily grab the attention of the modern rock lovers.
