Moving away from the Mississippi blues sound and getting pschycadelic on your ass the original funksters are back. If the First Funkadelic album was from another universe, then Free Your Mind, And your Ass Will Follow is from another dimension. Funkadelic are not so much pushing boundaries as changing the way people can explore their universe. There is not lots of money in this album, and it doesn't have the sound of being recorded at Abbey Road, but there is something more important here; songs. Funkadelic have been given a lump of coal and in less then year, they have turned then into diamonds. With the albums title track George Clinton reinvents you into his world, and this time he has let the goblins out of his head as he and his band digest more and acid. With lyric like "Free your mind, and your ass will follow, the kingdom of heave is within" you now this ain't gonna be anything you've heard before. Friday Night, August 14th and Funky Dollar Bill are from the same stream of conciseness as I Got A Thing, You Got A Thing, Everybody Got A Thing. Funkadelic have gotten more political and it only serves them well. Eulogy And Light is a cry form the ghetto and I pray that someone hears them. Free Your Mind, And your Ass Will Follow is the sound of what America has become and maybe it really is time for a revolution.
