If Kick Out The Jams by MC5 saw the destruction of Motor City, then Funkadelic is the aftermath. This is an album that aint about free love and shit like that. It ain't about a revolution and calling up to rise against the masses. It is about tha funk and feeling tha groove. It is the sound of Robert Johnson on space patrol. And it is this sound of post Motown-Psychedelic-Blues-Rock. Funkadelic returns the yesteryear of the Mississippi Delta. They sound like they write songs on the porch on a hot summer's afternoon. With the opening track Mommy, What's A Funkadelic, George Clinton and his crew take you into a world could only exist in the minds of mad men. Funkadelic do not believe in the 3 minute radio friendly pop song, they are far too busy exploring sounds at the edge of the universe. I Got A Thing, You Got A Thing, Everybody Got A Thing is the closest that this album comes to having a single, but you get the impression that single maybe ain't their thang. Funkadelic are creating a new world from the ashes of the old pop world. They can take you place you've only dreamed about on your most intense acid trips.
