It's been a while since I've listened to electronica as compelling as Hybrid's latest mix double disc, Soundsystem 01. There is just something captivating about this mix album. It grabs you with the dark overtones but keeps you with the ray of light that seeps out under the door. Things aren't all dark on Soundsystem 01 though. There are plenty of somewhat cheery moments on the mix but for the most part Hybrid manages to keep things a little edgier than most mixes.
The first disc of the mix is much more subdued and laid back. The second disc seems a little more on the sunny and uptempo side of things. I loved the track from Quiver called "Surin". On their bio they keep throwing around the term "Cinematic". It seems to be an apt descriptor for the duo. It's the type of electronic music that doesn't overwhelm you, doesn't hit you over the head. Instead it sort of coaxes you into a love for the genre and the music contained in the mix. When artists like Hybrid can take 27 tracks and turn them into something they can call their own is something special. There are times when these mixes just fall flat on their face because there is such a disconnect between the songs. Soundsystem 01 is different. It finds the similarities in all the tracks and manages to mesh them together.
For those of you who may have lost interest in electronic music, you might find yourself reinvigorated with the genre after checking out the new Hybrid mix set.
