People in Planes have always been a Marmite band - never any 'average' reviews, they just average out between the starry-eyed fans and the people vomiting in gutters. This album, it seems, is no exception to that rule, although I am about to make it one with this review I think...
PIP do break a few rules, I suppose. This alm certainly does cover almost every genre of indie you could think of, and a few you didn't, and this is something I personally quite like. True, it makes the album disjointed and confusing but the band somehow sound bigger than they did in 2006, and in amongst the randomness there are a few genuinely polished hooks and catchy melodies.
All that said however, there are still flaws with the idea. Not the picture-perfect production mind you, but the idea itself. Because eventually you do get tired of having your ears assaulted by post-grunge, then piano ballad, then acoustic ballad, then a proggy, Muse-style sound but without the grandeur. It falls a little flat for me., and I can pretty much garuntee that everyone who listens to this will have a different view of this album. The only consolation I could offer is that obviously they are doing it because they want to - nobody in marketing could have thought that this was a good idea.
