Athens Georgia, the birthplace of one of the longest running pop bands in American music. We are talking, of course, of REM. The town is also home to little known The Glands. It must be hard trying to follow in a great bands shadow but The Glands apparently aren’t going to let the stigmata of Athens slow them down. The Glands put their debut album out on Bar None in 1997 entitled Double Thriller to mediocre press. Somehow it was enough to garner the attention of the subsidiary of Universal, Capricorn Records. And they have chosen to self-title this one. It seems a strange place for this quirky band who sounds like the Eels main-man E singing for Olivia Tremor Control. This isn’t a bad thing. Capricorn just seems like a strange label for this band. That would probably be why The Glands is be re-released on Velocette Records, The music on the Glands is very inventive and original and they have too much fun in the delivery. There is a dark overtone on the album like the Eels Electro Shock Blues. In fact Ross Shapiro’s vocals are a cross between E’s and Tom Petty. The Glands is a band that may take a couple listens to fully appreciate but once your there, there is no turning back.
