Eagles Of Death Metal - Death By Sexy
It seems that the new in thing in rock & roll is the side project, and you can add Josh Homme to the list of rock stars looking for a lesser roll in another band. Still one of the chief songwriters for Eagles of Death Metal, Homme steps away from the mic and turns the vocal responsibilities over to Jesse Hughes. Hughes' high falsetto is the perfect compliment to EODM's sexed up boogie-rock, giving even the most bizarre sexually driven lyrics an air of innocence.
On Death By Sexy, the band's second album, Homme brings in a lot of the songwriting characteristics we know from that other band, Queens of the Stone Age. The guitars buzz, the drums shake, and the rhythms are pulsing. But as opposed to Queens, EODM are most notable for the obvious fun they're having while they play. With tongues planted in their cheeks, Hughes and Homme power through songs with titles like 'I Want You So Hard' and 'Don't Speak (I Came to Make a Bang!).' And amongst all the hard driving rock 'n' roll, they bust out the country-gospel inspired 'Bag O' Miracles,' bringing the CD home in appropriately ridiculous fashion.
While not intended to be an art project, Death By Sexy is thirteen tracks of brainless one-night-stand energy. And it might be the most fun you have listening to an album all year.
