Yet another talent has been exposed from IOTY (08). This one has more meaning to me due to their geographic location. Anytime a Long Island act comes across my desk, I pay close attention with not just favoritism, but scrutiny as well. So let's take a microscope to our 7th placed, Gabriel the Marine.
Reliant upon the mood swing of progressive rock Gabriel The Marine has a strong sound with a violinistic energy that has a lot of promise. The Gold Coast is sullen and vocally that rollercoaster in-your-face exploration we all enjoy. towards the closing measures of this track they tribute an almost Brand New feel. Twilight The Sun has a fantastic continous melody and a vocal punch that reminds me almost of Texas natives The Nixons. Maybe Baby belongs in the players of those who enjoy Jimmy Gnecco (Ours) and his laxed cocky lounge-alt-rock sound. But even Gnecco isn't this enjoyable, the violins add an extra degree of flame, until of course the final bridge meets with all band members combining for a vocal explosion. Fantastic jabs of melodies and solaced lyricism, just as Lovely Bones exemplifies, antagonistic and gorgeously calm.
Gabriel The Marine has a sound like no other in IOTY 08, they are the calm before the storm, the belief of not Emo, but multi-paced genrification. Absolutely one of the best finds in this year's Indie Of The Year. You guys make this fellow Long Islander proud and excited about any releases coming my way!
