In researching this review I found out that the signing of I Set My Friends on Fire was due to a very different cover of "Crank Dat", a song by an artist known as Soulja Boy. It was getting upward of 50,000 plays a day on Myspace. I'm not sure if it was just this song that got the attention of Epitaph but regardless, that's where the duo of Nabil Moo and Matt Mihana of Miami, Fl ended up.

You Can't Spell Slaughter without Laughter is a bit of a crazy album, one that will most likely go over most people's heads. There are tracks on here where you don't know if they are taking seriously or not. There is killer screamo on here as well as some weirdo-electro-angry-rap like on "HXC 2-Step". Instead of having guitar break downs the band opts for computer generated samples. It's just strange. They have a strange concoction again on "WTFWJD", the screamo, the electro, the emo. It's not bad. I would say the worst track on the album is the god awful "Crank Dat" cover. It seems to mock the rest of what they do.

So are I Set My Friends On Fire ready for the physical medium or should they have stayed an online phenomenon? I really don't know if I can answer this. I'm not sure if people will get this unless it's a viral thing. I do have to give the boys credit for not cranking out the same old screamo stuff. This music is definitely different and I'm positive that they will find an audience for this. I don't know how much mileage they will be able to get but for now, I think Epitaph knows what they are doing.

This band has so much going for them that I don't like, I still don't know why I love this album so much.

I Set My Friends On Fire, what can I say? These guys, in my opinion, are a wonderful duo. This is a great debut. From the introduction, "Sh!t It Talks.... I'm Out Of Here" to the brutal closing song "Reese's Pieces, I Don't Know Who John Cleese Is?", this is by far my favorite 2008 release so far. It has their songs from before they were signed, also. The were re-recorded to studio quality. "ASL", "Beaty Is In The Eyes of the Beerholder", "HxC 2-Step", and their cover of Soulja Boy's "Crank That". This album is wonderful! I listen to it everday! I definitely recommend it!
