Ground isn’t really a new band in the Calgary music scene. They have been around in some form or another since the early 90’s. World Away is their third independently released album and it really shows that these guys are seasoned musicians. Their music is gentle and takes it easy on the ears except for the odd burst of sonically demanding choruses. Take their first single for instance. On “All The Most, lead vocalist Michael Robinson coos into your ears until the chorus breaks and the guitars really kick in. This is a super catchy song and I found myself singing it for hours after listening to the CD. The band is rounded out by Roland Griffith on drums, Jeff Drummond (guitar), and Greg Fairweather (bass). World Away is a collection of guitar-centric songs that remind me of something that Dave Matthews would be capable of. In fact, throw some horns and violin into the mix and it would be as full a sound as The Dave Matthews Band. The band likes to play with the listener as is obvious on the little bended note I caught at the end of the superb “Steam Train. Ground has lots of jazz leanings as well as a bit towards the jam-band side of things. I was able to catch their album release party at Mount Royal College and was very impressed with their live presence. Seems like these boys are at home in front of a crowd but listening to their happy jams I couldn’t help but imagine watching Ground at an outdoor festival under the sun, rather than in a smoky lounge. World Away has a beautiful production as well. Something that’s hard to find with indie releases.
