Sometimes it just takes some confidence to release a solo album. Bobi Cespedes is a Cuban-born singer and percussionist that is carrying on a centuries-old tradition of Afro-Cuban singing and drumming. She has been on recordings for years including some albums with acclaimed percussionist Mickey Hart. Now is Bobi’s time for her own solo debut and Six Degrees is providing us with one of the best releases to come out of Cuba. The album starts out with tradition. “Rezos� is a Yoruban Chant that calls for Cuban gods. There are some very funky rhythms happening on Rezos. Cespedes is not only a traditional percussionist but she is able to incorporate modern elements in her music. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a remix album happen of these tracks because there is just such a groove that happens with these. It wouldn’t be a far stretch to move these songs onto a Latin dancefloor. While their age doesn’t compare, think of the voice of Cesaria Evora and the beats of Patato mixed. This is where Bobi Cespedes is. This is a great debut album that should belong in any world music collection.
