Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future is the new sophomore release from indie duo The Bird And The Bee.
The group, consisting of Inara George and Greg Kurstin, create '60s-inspired dance pop. An electronic undercurrent mutates the music into a futuristic twee pop.
The album opens with a bang with the synth-heavy intro song "Fanfare" and rarely disengages from there. The ooo la la la's on tracks like "Meteor" are seemingly designed for the sole purpose of burrowing into your subconscious.
While a darker side does briefly emerge on songs like "Baby", upbeat dance rhythms underlie most of the album. "What's In the Middle" sounds like it could be a Lily Allen track in both style and cadence (I coincidentally saw the band open for Allen a couple of years ago). The wild west saloon atmosphere of "You're A Cad" and it's kiss off attitude are even more reflective of Allen.
George's vocals twinkle and shimmer along with the music and are a guaranteed source of aural pleasure.
The duo tries to branch out on "Love Letter To Japan" by picking up the tempo of the beats and distorting the vocals. The results end up losing the charm and intimacy of their other tracks.
In the end it's the catchiness of song like the clap/stomp "My Love" which you will take away from the album.
