Juliana seems to be a girl with an identity crisis. On the same day she released this album as well as a much softer, mellower album, Beatiful Creatures. Most critics seem to jump on board Beatiful Creature and praise her softer side and in the meantime the slammed Total System Failure. The thing with these albums is not to take them as the same artist but to think of them as two completely different affairs. This one is grungy and dirty and gets to be very loud. She recorded TSF with her touring band helping to get that edgier sound. Never gaining the recognition she deserved both for the Blake Babies (her former band) or for her solo career. She has a great voice that is suited for many different types of music and this one showcases her rougher side. The lyrics on Failure may have suffered a bit in gaining the heaviness but the album in the end is quite a treat for fans of bands like the Breeders and Elastica.
