Soul Coughing - Irresistible Bliss

Unfortunately the brilliant beat masters, Soul Coughing, only put out three albums in their short-lived career. They had a unique sound going on, blending jazz, rock, rap, and anything else they saw fit from song to song. Out of the three albums, Irresistible Bliss is one of their finest moments. The album opens up with one of their signature songs, "Super Bon Bon" and it is an upbeat track that fires on all cylinders. The album then takes a different direction with the track "Soft Serve". It follows the lead of G. Love and Special Sauce with the laid back funk and reverb guitar. It's very few people who can make the phrase "They undone" sound like an instrument themselves. They saw a bit of airplay with the brilliant "Soundtrack To Mary". One of my favorite tracks on Irresistible Bliss is the mathematical "4 Out Of 5". There are so many great moments on the album that every time I listen I find something I missed the last time. El Oso also charted on Billboard but arguably Bliss is Soul Coughing's finest contributions. With Mike Doughty's recent solo albums as a marker, it looks like he is moving further and further away from the Soul Coughing style too. Looks like these three albums are all we have. Try on the Rhino collection, Lust In Phaze if you are brand new to the band.
