As the CD begins, the gritty guitars have me praying on a stack of bibles for a pair of fitting lungs. Then shazam, finally some grungy metal without the predictable Puddle Of Crud lyrical syndrome. "Something's really got to change. The way we live our lives in disregard for one another. Can't we see it's time to change our perception. Something's really got to give".
The lyrics I'm referring to are off Seemless' self-titled debut CD. Recently re-released by Equal Vision Records in association with Losing Face Records, Seemless' self-titled album has hit shelves.
Track two "The Wanderer" did what else, but wander with a wavering back bone bass line accompanying the verse. Though these four rockers seem to be driving at generic hard rock undertones, this effort in particular is far and away the most refreshing of such genre in quite a few years of indie efforts.
Though plastered in recommendations for fans of C.O.C. (Corrosion Of Conformity), Double Drive, and even as light as Collective Soul listeners, its tracks like six "The Crisis" that are obvious tell tale signs of a rock group influenced heavily by the metal of the 80's.
Problematic may be the lack of technical string creations. Just as I am immediately attracted to the blitzing upbeat guitar drowned tracks like seven "Lay My Burden," I am bored just as quickly as all the songs are starting to take on the same metallic taste.
That is until track eight "War/Peace" comes along with yet another simplistic guitar approach, only a bit more bluesier than previous tracks. Occasional light fretting, and even an assortment of guitar solo's crossing things out. In the end though, it was track nine "In My Time Of Need" which was yet again simplistic in format, that proved to be the standout track here with its funky rockin style. Ballsy, and attentive, this grind 'em out piece is in your face and shows guitar rock does not need to be technically difficult to be enjoyable.
If vocals are the key elements on your lasting impression of a record, most fans of the last thirty years of Rock in all its forms will enjoy the pipes of lead man Jesse David. From there, once again though not technically jaw dropping (all guitar solo's aside) this re-release of Seemless' self-produced album keeps consistent edgy rhythm, dirty hooks, and a low down grungy pace throughout each track.
