The early 21st century saw Pantera singer Phil Anselmo launch several side projects, including Necrophagia, Viking Crown, Christ Inversion, Southern Isolation, and Superjoint Ritual. The latter group is comprised of guitarists Jim Bower and Kevin Bond, drummer Joseph Fazzio, with none other than Hank Williams III on bass (Anselmo handled both vocal and bass duties for the group's recordings, but opted to concentrate solely on vocals for the group's live shows). According to Bower, the members of Superjoint Ritual approached the writing and recording of their debut with "the perfect 15-year-old mentality of having everything loud, everything on 10, getting loaded, and letting whatever happens, happen." Recorded at a rehearsal ...

Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul started forming up Damageplan in early 2003, soon after the demise of their previous band, thrash metal heroes Pantera. The brothers began working on tracks at Dime's Dallas home studio, unsure of exactly what they'd do with the material, but determined to banish the bad taste of Pantera's awkward breakup. Ex-Halford and -Diesel Machine guitarist (and full-time Dime pal) Pat Lachman heard the demos and expressed interest in singing for the project. While he'd never served as a frontman, Lachman's performances over the raw material were strong enough to land him the vocalist position. The lineup was completed with the addition of local bassist Bob Kakaha, who was immediately dubbed Bob Zilla for his monst...

In similar company with new-school French progressive dance artists such as Motorbass, Air, Cassius, and Dimitri from Paris, Parisian duo Daft Punk quickly rose to acclaim by adapting a love for first-wave acid house and techno to their younger roots in pop, indie rock, and hip-hop. The combined talents of DJs Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the pair's first projects together included Darling, a voiceless indie cover band; their current recording name derives from a review in U.K. music weekly Melody Maker of a compilation tape Darling were featured on, released by Krautrock revivalists Stereolab (their lo-fi D.I.Y. cover of a Beach Boys song was derided as "daft punk"). Subsequently ditching the almost inev...

The cliché about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter. Prior to his breakthrough in 1972, he recorded a proto-metal record and a pop/rock album, eventually redefining glam rock with his ambiguously sexy Ziggy Stardust persona. Ziggy made Bowie an international star, yet he wasn't content to continue to churn out glitter rock. By the mid-'70s, he developed an effete, sophist...

The original line-up of Fred Durst, Wes Borland, Sam Rivers, John Otto, and DJ Lethal are back from an eight year hiatus to bring their world back to ours. Fred Durst and Wes Borland said in a joint statement:"We decided we were more disgusted and bored with the state of heavy popular music than we were with each other. Regardless of where our separate paths have taken us, we recognize there is a powerful and unique e...

The members of Three Days Grace began bashing punk chords when they were in their teens, carving a derivative yet energetic sound that fueled their live performances. Three Days Grace were formed in Norwood, Ontario, Canada, in 1997 by Adam Gontier (vocals, guitar), Brad Walst (bass), and Neil Sanderson (drums). The group was originally called Groundswell, a five-piece that lasted from 1992 until transforming to a trio five years later. Gontier and Walst were raised in Norwood, and many of their songs were inspired by living in a place with a population of around 1,500. The bandmembers were still in high school when they had their first gig, and they performed anywhere that would accept them -- including opening for a movie....

Here and Now.Traversing the sonic spectrum with a pulsating energy and enthusiasm reflected in the musical diversity, Here and Now is the much-loved Nickelback experience propelled to new levels as the band continues to lure listeners into their trademark party brew of fast-lane indulgences; some tunes tamed by somber reflection while others wickedly embraced with a devilish wink and a smile. Change isn’t easy. But Seether vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Shaun Morgan understands that nothing worth accomplishing ever is. “When I was in rehab in 2006,” he recalls, embracing a sense of humorous self-awareness that comes with hindsight, “I learned that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” In other words: evolution is key not only to surviving but also thriving. It’s a way of thinking that Morgan applies to both himself and to the way his band operates. In a career that’s spanned nearly a decade, the power trio of Morgan, bassist Dale Stewart and drummer John Humphrey that is collectively known as Seether has toured the gl...

The combination of musical energy between brothers and Hayley's bold charisma earned them instant attention, particularly from Florida indie Fueled by Ramen, who signed the band and put them to work recording their debut. Says Hayley, "Some of our favorite bands are on Fueled by Ramen. We knew that they would know exactly how to carry out the vision for our band and music." Paramore went into the studio with producers James Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Underoath) and Mike Green (Yellowcard, The Black Maria) and blew them away with their sincerity and enthusiasm. When Hayley Williams began writing lyrics for the songs that appear on Paramore’s self-titled new album, sh...

Fall Out Boy rose to the forefront of emo pop in the mid-2000s, selling more than four million albums thanks to the band's tabloid-grabbing bassist, able-voiced frontman, and handful of Top 40 hits. The group's four members first came together in suburban Wilmette, a bedroom community just 14 miles north of Chicago, around 2001. Vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joe Trohman had all taken part in various bands connected to Chicago's underground hardcore scene. Most notably, Hurley drummed for Racetraitor, the furiously political metalcore outfit whose brief output was both a rallying point and sticking point within the hardcore community. As Fall Out Boy, the quartet used...

The Dillinger Escape Plan create maniacally intense, crushingly metallic, and decidedly hardcore punk-infused jazz-time-signature-invoking compositions displaying an unparalleled musical bravery, precision musicianship, meticulously thought-out, and complex structuring, and rigorous physical endurance. The band's guitarists and drummer are regular features in publications geared toward the guitar- and drum-playing set. The depth of extremity and mental challenge presented by their music virtually defies description, at once recalling the mind-wandering spirit of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the complex heavy metal of latter-day Death, Cynic's solitary death metal achievement, and the progressive hard rock of Rush. Their performances bring...

Godspeed You! Black Emperor (formerly punctuated Godspeed You Black Emperor! and commonly abbreviated to GYBE or GY!BE) is a Canadian post-rock band which originated from Montreal, Quebec in 1994. They were the first outside act to release their recordings through Constellation, an influential independent record label also located in Montreal. The band is perhaps best known for their lengthy instrumental songs and large membership. With nine semi-permanent members, they create prolonged tracks which utilize short movements, wide volume changes, and numerous recorded and sampled sounds. Studio albums typically contain no more than five songs, and often omit the band's name and track titles from the cover and a...

The cosmic post-rock band Mogwai were formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist Dominic Aitchison, and drummer Martin Bulloch, longtime friends with the goal of creating "serious guitar music." Toward that end they added another guitarist, John Cummings, before debuting in March 1996 with the single "Tuner," a rarity in the Mogwai discography for its prominent vocals; the follow-up, a split single with Dweeb titled "Angels vs. Aliens," landed in the Top Ten on the British indie charts. Following appearances on a series of compilations, Mogwai returned later in the year with the 7" "Summer"; after another early-1997 single, "New Paths to Hel...

Deborah Henriksson was born in New Jersey, USA, though she has lived in Sweden for half of her life now!Deborah's vocal journey has also taken her to unexpected places. Following an early passion for folk music, she trained her voice in classical technique, developing a long legato line as a soprano. For many years she sang concerts interpreting classical art songs, but she never lost her love of the folk song. While recording her second CD, Simply Christmas, she discovered an entirely undisturbed, hauntingly innocent sound in her lower range. This sound has allowed her to return to traditional and Celtic songs using a combination of long vocal line and the emotional inte...

Trysette is a classically trained pianist, singer, songwriter and composer from the north coast of New South Wales, Australia. A broken heart at 19 inspired her first written and composed song. So exciting and cathartic was the process Trysette quickly forgot all her woes and was grateful for the source of inspiration. Songwriting was now the new love and she has never looked back. Trysette's voice is warm and a little husky with strength and depth. Though unique and distinctive, she is often likened by her fans to the voices of Taylor Swift, Jewel, Emmylou Harris and Sara McLachlan. A fusion of folk and pop, Trysette has attitude, is intuitively melodic and intelligently sensual. The lady has something to say.&nb...

Miracles of Modern Science are an unlikely rock band. Using just mandolin, violin, cello, standup bass, and drums, they create explosive pop that upends notions of what these instruments can do.The band began life at Princeton University. Vocalist/bassist Evan Younger and mandolinist Josh Hirshfeld shared a hall their freshman year and soon began hijacking open m...

BOBGOBLIN BIO2012Pulling from influences ranging from punk, new wave, and 70's glam rock, all the way to symphonic music, the veteran power pop group BOBGOBLIN have returned from a long absence to release Love Lost for Blood Lust, certainly the band's most sonically expansive and intense production to date. Having produced two previous albums under the moniker of their more subdued alter ago, Adventures of Jet (AOJ), Love Lost for Blood Lust is a return for the group, not just in name, but also to the abrasive, socio-politically-charged, and satirically-minded power pop that the band's core members purv...

Awaken to the Morning Birds and prepare to be swept away from the ordinary. Forged from an uncanny mixture of diverse musical styles, this band’s music is as innovative as it is accessible. Powerful bass lines, lush harmonies and soulful strings are complimented by break beats, trumpets, and cascading keys as Jennifer Thorington and Samuel Markus weave their stunning harmonies into sublime pop.The Morning Birds have been pioneering their signature sound since they released their low-fi masterpiece, Inspiration Point, 3 years ago.  After last year’s The Quickening they have returned with the pared down EP, Surrender to This, a work that gives free range to their daring eclecticism. Primary songwriters Jenn And Sa...

Melt into the star-crossed love of an east coast boy during the cold winter months. Cameron Stenger's authentically bittersweet album Lovers  is a wonderfully honest and delicate album filled with the kind of melancholy folk only a wind blown troubadour could muster.  Near the Hudson River as the seasons changed, Stenger completed this striking 10 song LP that gently peers into the depths of the trapped emotions invoked by a past love, released when his hands finally held his guitar.  With every song, he seeks to explain what could not be communicated properly at the time.Bedroom musicians in this day and age, when done right, have the ability to take you back to a time when you were e...

At times Jim from the Moon plays acoustic tunes about girls, the devil, and similar distractions. They flow in the vein of Loudon Wainwright III and Neil Young, sung with a voice soaked in years of Irish storytelling. Other times he expels far-out electric rock that is primal and space-ward, with hints of Hendrix's blues. Both sides are focused, catchy, and ready to be eaten by your ears.Jim is going into the studio this month with drummer Jeff Boyd to record their debut dark folk/space rock album. They will be promoting the album throughout venues in Baltimore/D.C., including headlining the No Kings Collective art show "Leap Year" on February 4th at The Dunes in ...

If it were the 1600's, The Incredible Kicks would have been writing thirty-four flute fugues. Instead, they're stuck in the 20th century, the age of near infinite musical genres. If you take the lift up past ‘Alternative', all the way up to ‘Prog-Pop', then jump through the nearest window and take a flying fox over to the next building - that's where you'll find The Incredible Kicks. Casual and friendly, with a tendency to go a little bit over the top. When writing a song, if the question is raised, "should we go there?", the answer is always yes! Travis Hair on lead vox/ guitar, Josh Griffin on drums/vox and Luis A Bran bass/vox, The Incredible Kicks are desperate and determined for the opportunity to infect your ear ...

Victory Mansions are a five-piece from Newcastle Upon Tyne that formed with the simple goal of writing and performing original music. Cymbals Eat Guitars released their debut album Why There Are Mountains in 2009, receiving a response that far exceeded the band’s expectations. Two years have gone by since that early hype cycle began, and a lot has changed. Half of the musicians that played on Why There Are Mountains came and went before major touring began, replaced by Brian Hamilton on keys and Matthew Whipple on bass. Hamilton and Whipple joined singer/songwriter/guitarist Joseph D’Agostino and drummer Matt Miller to take the show on the road, finally solidifying the lineup. An official release of Why There Are Mountains on the band’s own imprint, extensive US touring with the likes of Bear in Heaven, Los Camp...

Any boss would be proud to promote The Employees, a Midwestern four piece alternative / rock band that has been climbing the musical corporate ladder in Chicago without taking a sick day. Clocking in over time working on their sophomore album release titled, Unemployed, the band has been hard at work putting the final tweaks on this new concept album. From the depression of our economy, unemployment, corruption, environmental disasters, flu epidemics, the death of the America dream, and wanting to escape from all of it, The Employees take us on a wild Ride.   Who else to know better about the economy than The Employees in it? ...
