Featured biographies and interviews from today's indie artists

Few bands have as much potential as the indie-pop duo Fancy Me Yet. With a combination of impatient guitar riffs, and vocals that resonate through stereotypes, the band is making quite a buzz in the music scene. Natasha, formerly known as JD Natasha, had much success early on in her music career. Having had a record deal with EMI and 3 Latin Grammy nominations, she definitely made an impact in the Latin / bilingual community. But despite a notable three year run, Natasha decided to pursue a different direction in her career and then came Fancy Me Yet.Natasha Jeanne (vocals), Alex Darren...

The band is like a breath of fresh air for the indie-pop and catchy electronic scene. Highly danceable, but with that touch of explicit melancholy and sweetness imposed by pop lyrics. Muffled synthetic-festive spirit by anything the heart needs to tell. Manchester reminiscent, no doubt. The large experience of these four band members in music, explains their authentic 80´s sound (new wave, electronic body music), which they complete with the nowadays explosive dance-pop sound. This recently born project, based in Barcelona, is said to have a great potential to arrive to international markets, in spite of the title of their first album ...

notic nastic are an explosive neon cocktail of sugary pop bubbles, sharp vocals and distinctive dark notes. the members from new york and berlin produce twisted electronic sounds and freaky beats. berlin based, these sensitive little techno aliens prefer to remain anonymous revealing their identity ...

I Believe in Hotpants could have been any number of things. It could have been the droning chant of a diabolical religious cult, your mother's personal form of non-violent protest during the Cuban Missile Crisis, non-sensical jargon spat out by an internet slang generator, or a short-lived sitcom during the Must See TV years.Fortunately, for all of us, it culminated in being a band creating music as unique as the band name itself. In other words, it's a delicious cultural exercise of "not judging a book by its cover." Because, I assure you, you'd never think of these fellows, or their music, as being a part of something with a name so seemingly ridiculous.Mike and Kevin Moritz, guitar/bass/vocals/identical twins, are ori...

Their debut EP goes by the title of "One" and features 3-songs and 15-minutes worth of quality music, cool 70's HARD ROCK tunes with great chorus!.Whity's voice has an explosive charge and imagery looks like Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, even the guitars of Joanie and Allison reinventing a sunset strip's glamour, while Jena and  Ross on drums and bass, are powerful and arrogant in the same way.If you like all female melodic hard rock  then you will be more than happy with this record!Super sexy and wild!!Band Members: -Whity, vocals -Ross Foxy, bass -Jena, drums -Jonie Johns, guitar -allison, guitar ...

There is an abiding circle: one where romance and tragedy exist together and hope coincides with desperation as a coil in nature as much as the unseen. In this understanding lies the dark themes and bruising medium of O’Brother. Carrying the weight of the luminance and spacey textures from their 2009 EP, The Death of Day, the Atlanta, GA five some have grown into sounds of scorching heaviness and punctuated melodic interruptions that act as puzzles in-between the groaning feedback of Garden Window, the band’s debut full length. “The more we played the more we turned our amps up and the lower we tuned,” O'Brother’s lead singer/guitarist Tanner Merritt defi...

When Tosin Abasi released his debut solo album under the moniker ANIMALS AS LEADERS in 2009, few would have predicted the band’s meteoric rise over the next two years. Although Abasi earned acclaim as the lead guitarist in the Washington, D.C.-based metalcore act Reflux, it was still a long-shot that an instrumental album of progressive metal with jazz, electronic and ambient flourishes would develop anything more than a cult following.Fast-forward two-plus years to “Weightless,” the group’s sophomore effort, and ANIMALS AS LEADERS is revered worldwide as a trailblazing pioneer of modern heavy music. The group’s genre-defying compositions have earned extensive praise — Steve Vai called the ban...

King Kohn is an all-acoustic artist with booming vocals, ravaging passion and eloquent lyrics that bring out the beauty and the beast of Rock-N-Roll.Pooling from his diverse interests of acoustic, folk, rock, classical, theatrical and metal music, he combines these elements in a creative, off-beat, self-proclaimed genre: ACOUSTIC DEATH METAL HIPPIE FOLK ROCK. Matthew Solberg (born October 26, 1981 in Kansas City, Kansas) is a singer/songwriter and guitarist. He uses a fingerstyle method of guitar playing in many of his songs.Solberg first started to play the guitar when he was about 14 years old and living in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was raised; however, he quickly gave up on the guitar after only a few lessons. It was around this time that he also gave up playing the clarinet, which was the first instrument he had learned how to play and which he had been playing for about 5 years. At the age of 17 and heavily into classic rock, Solberg felt inspired to dig out his dad's guitar after listening to "Working Man" by Rush one day. He soon became obsessed with the guitar and used t...

In just a year or so, soulsters Fitz & the Tantrums went from the living room to the main stage. The recipe for meteoric success? Six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ.Since their first show at Hollywood’s Hotel Café in December 2008, Fitz and co. have toured with Maroon 5, played to thousands at Colorado’s world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre, shared the stage New Year’s Eve with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and performed on KCRW’s esteemed show, Morning Becomes Eclectic, all this on the strength of their stellar five-song EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1.For some bands, it takes a l...

A veteran of New York's anti-folk scene, songwriter Regina Spektor makes quirky, highly eclectic, but always personal music. Born and raised in Moscow until age nine, Spektor listened to her father's bootleg tapes of Western pop and rock as a young child and also learned to play piano. She and her family moved from Russia to the Bronx, where she was immersed in American culture (at the time, hers was the first Russian family in the borough in 20 years). Eventually, Spektor and her family became part of a community that balanced her Russian Jewish roots with her new home's culture. Meanwhile, she continued to practice piano anywhere she could, including at her synagogue, until her family got a piano of its own....

Faced with an increasingly stagnant post-hardcore landscape, Philadelphia-based five-piece 20 Days In formed in June 2010 as an effort to channel a wide range of influences toward a new, unique, and accessible direction. The result has yielded a sound that is both refreshingly diverse and comfortingly familiar in its innovative union of post-hardcore, indie, and alternative rock. 20 Days In's bold strides have been received warmly, calling to mind for many the qualities of Circa Survive, Tool, Dance Gavin Dance, and Avenged Sevenfold, among many others. With such a broad and rich array of techniques and influences to draw from, it is impossible to predict precisely how 20 Days In will sound next, but one thing i...

Velvet Ashes was conceived in 2009 when Nico Spahni had got tired of his ambient electronica act (too much knob tweaking!). He switched off his computer, grabbed an acoustic guitar and started writing songs. In early 2011 Nico was joined by Marie Alexis (vocals, percussion). The line-up was finally completed when a first jam session with Simon Mathys (accordion) proved to be harmonious....

Founding BOHREN members Thorsten Benning (drums), Robin Rodenberg (Bass), Reiner Henseleit (guitar), Morten Gass (guitar/piano) started playing music together in 1988. They were friends from school and they shared a common taste for all kinds of extreme music like Grindcore, Hardcore, Death or Doom Metal.Driven by the idea of a more unique style of music, they formed BOHREN (german word for drilling) in 1992...

First it was For Emma, Forever Ago. The soul in a refraction of icicles. A moment hanging like breath on air. And yet life - even still life - is not still. The story is not a story if it does not unravel. Your eyes you may cast backward, but the heart is locked in the chest and must beat forever forward. Bon Iver, Bon Iver is the frozen beast pressing upward from a loosening earth, one ear cocked to the echo of the ghost choir still singing, the other craving the martial call of drums tumbling, of thrum and wheeze. The desolation smoke has dissipated, cut with strips of brass. Celebration will not be denied, the cabinet cannot contain the rattle, there is meat on the bones. It's there right away, in the t...

It was only last year that The Constellations released their album debut, “Southern Gothic”: the eleven-track record, mixing rock and roll, hip-hop, and soul music and featuring none other than Cee-Lo Green and Asher Roth, has been critically acclaimed and revitalized the idea of a coherent album with a strong message. After two years spent writing and recording the album with producer Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), some of their hit songs such as “Felicia” or “Perfect Day” are now being featured on TV shows such as “House” and “Chuck”. That said, the band is certainly not resting on their laurels as they travel the country and conver...

Born in rural North Carolina in the late 70's, prolif kochise's background is as unique as his quasi soulful, but eclectic sound. He stood out as an "A" honor-roll student-athlete in high school while being a captain on the varsity basketball team. He went on to attend an engineering college, obtaining a BS in computer science before later picking up a Master's degree in Sports Management. His wide array of education serves as a background to the intellectual perspectives he takes on a variety of topics from the moral decay in America, to the self-degradation of today's youth, to the deterioration of the family, to political unrest, to usage of the infamous "n-word", to his strong faith in Jesus Christ. ...

Jason Ogden, the man driving the vehicle known as Penny Blacks has been restless while the 7-piece band chips away at their debut full-length album.  To combat the idle hands and overactive songwriting glands, Ogden has recorded a 5-song EP to tide us over until the fall release of the full-length album.  Gold Standards is Penny Blacks' second EP release, and it continues the tradition of capturing the mid-fi, bedroom-torch-song ethos that began when Ogden started posting home recordings on his MySpace several years ago; yet it does something more. The scope of these songs goes well beyond the isolation of a room, an apartment. There is a traveled maturity to songs like "Socorro" and "Chop Yourself....

Known more for blunts and beer that bullets and bling, Devin the Dude has kept a smile on Hip Hop's face while most of his peers have opted for a menacing scowl. New York City's Unsane assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended the scum/art industrial sturm und drang of Foetus, the Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Sonic Youth with the decidedly more straightforward hardcore idiom favored by acts like Sick of It All. While developing the blueprint for noise-metal bands to follow, Unsane cut a remarkable swath through underground music, inspiring a devoted, cult-like following around the globe. As a power trio, Unsane relied upon a hammering, power-press rhythm section, a searing Telecaste...

Born the youngest of ten children, raised in Southwest Detroit and a resident of Nashville since 2005, Jack White is one of the most prolific and renowned artists of the past fifteen years. When the White Stripes started in 1997 no one, least of all Jack, ever expected that a red-and-white two-piece band would take hold in the mainstream world. With the release of 2001’s White Blood Cells the band was thrust on magazine covers and captivating audiences through worldwide touring. “Fell in Love With a Girl” served as the band’s breakthrough hit and its accompanying Michel Gondry Lego clip was chosen by Pitchfork Media as the #1 music video of the 2000’s....

In the ever turbulent world of punk rock music, New York City claims the Ramones and Los Angeles proudly boasts PENNYWISE, the most significant hardcore band to emerge from SoCal punk’s second wave. A thriving, ground-breaking punk rock band for over 20 years, the Hermosa Beach group has seen members come and go but it’s relentless, in-your-face, middle finger in the air, anthem-chanting sound has never wavered one iota. The genesis of PENNYWISE can be traced back to the South Bay 1988 when punk couldn’t be less popular and metal ruled the roost. The four original members of PENNYWISE immediately crafted a style all its own—a tidal wave of Californi...

Love him or hate him, the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" -- Marilyn Manson -- was indisputably among the most notorious and controversial entertainers of the 1990s. Celebrated by supporters as a crusader for free speech and denounced by detractors as little more than a poor man's Alice Cooper, Manson was the latest in a long line of shock rockers, rising to the top of the charts on a platform of sex, drugs, and Satanism. Though widely dismissed by critics, his brand of metal nevertheless struck a major chord with the youth market, and he became a mainstream anti-hero on the strength of a masterfully orchestrated marketing campaign, much to the chagrin of conservative politicians and concerned parents. Such attention pushed...

In 1982, a bunch of teenage kids started recording music cassette tape to cassette tape, in Diamond Bar, CA.  and making recordings of music which they played for each other.  That project was called The Hippie Punk Connection.  Many of those kids started their own bands.  One of those kids wanted to revisit that concept with all the new recording technology available today, this project is called THE FOOL FUNNEL...

2003 is the year BETA appears on scene. Four friends and musicians with the idea of making both interesting and intense music.
