Colin Tench, Petri Lemmy Lindström and Pasi Koivu began this collaboration almost by accident. Chance meetings on Facebook! We are all lovers of a huge variety of music. Pasi asked Colin to play guitar on Iron Pillows in late 2011. He did. Petri heard the result and asked if he could play bass on it. We KNEW what we had from that one small thing that we did. In 2012, Pasi sent Colin Ice King. That was the real start of the collaboration and album plans. After we had completed about 6 tracks, I think we were all stunned by what we were doing. The results were fun, moving, foot tapping and powerful. It sounded like we have been playing together for 10 years. Pasi, composer and keyboard player, with the most original and far ranging music...

Fort Worth based duo, PINKISH BLACK, announces their signing to Century Media Records. PINKISH BLACK is the duo Jon Teague on drums and vocalist/synthesizer, Daron Beck. They are the continuation of THE GREAT TYRANT, a three piece that released one LP posthumously following the passing of their bass player, Tommy Atkins. THE GREAT TYRANT was on its way to redefining what heavy music was. When Atkins died, the only changes were the name and how to achieve this as a two piece, the latter being no small feat.PINKISH BLACK's last, self-titled album, released on Handmade Birds, featured seven tracks of dark, intense and at times, haunting songs. As one of the heaviest bands of late to feature no stringed instruments, PINKISH BL...

How To Dress Well is the stage name of songwriter and producer Tom Krell. Krell’s burgeoning career began in 2009 when, having just moved from Brooklyn to Berlin, his songs began to emerge online via a hugely prolific string of free, digital EPs posted in anonymity on his blog. Combining a gorgeous falsetto with fractured R&B-influenced beats, an instinctive ear for subtly devastating melody and elements of noise, sound collage and avant-garde composition, Krell’s debut album Love Remains offered a beautiful window into a startlingly realised artistic imagination. Praised for both its conceptual strength and immediate emotional resonance, Love Remains duly garnered vast critical acclaim and highlights such as “Re...

"Most of my ideas are written at night" explains SBTRKT. "Late at night, when everything around is silent - that atmosphere is where most of this record came from, and for me it explains it's sound"SBTRKT is no stranger to writing, recording and releasing music. To date he's had multiple releases on Brainmath, Numbers, Ramp, Monkeytown and now home label Young Turks. Add to that reworkings of Radiohead and Goldie, and remixes of Modeselektor... However, this self-titled release is his first full-length album. "This release is the culmination of a longer period of constant writing and collaboration, tracks on previous EPs were written as singular pieces. This record is much more of a whole project, more r...

Nipping at the ragged heels of their eagerly devoured Sod in the Seed EP, WHY? at last unleash their fifth long-player, a meticulous work of morbid fascination and offbeat romanticism dubbed Mumps, etc. Though there is a mysterious sickness (perhaps of the mind) that lurks about these thirteen songs, one might also imagine the title as describing the musically swole state of these three Midwestern&nb...

What do you do when you're sixteen and in deep shit? You’re looking out at the world from the strip-mall and the detention hall, from the basement and the cul-de-sac and it just looks like there is a wall around you. Everybody tells you and your friends that you’re going nowhere, that your lives are already ruined. What the fuck do you do?.You hang around and smash stuff and get high and try to be a bad-ass, that’s what you do. You steal and drink and smash up the car your mom gave you and pull your pee-pee out in public. You work at sandwich shops and fast-food joints and try to screw private school girls because they think your tough and the girls at your school think your gay because you pretended to g...

Every Converge album is a milestone in the heavy music community and the band's latest is the most integral album to date in a catalog that's celebrated to an almost religious degree by countless fans of punk, metal and hardcore.  "Born out of the dream mélange of melody and noise as pioneered by Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine... The History of Apple Pie are giving bands a good name" -Guardian Band of The Day 'A mesmerizing live band' - Loud &Quiet A year into their fledgling career, The History Of Apple Pie have grown up in warp-speed like the weird and engaging plants in David Attenborough docs. Updating the stoned collegiate guitar aesthetic of their heroes - Sonic Youth, Radiohead and Blur - the London fivepiece have brushed up. We're speaking figuratively, of course, and while they've lost none of their scruffy appeal (these lot are destined get run...

One-man band Louis Jones, hailing from Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, recorded slightly skewed, reverb-heavy amalgamations of ‘60s doo wop, Brill Building pop, and bashful garage rock — often with dazed surf guitar accents — as Spectrals. The 7” single “Leave Me Be” was released in 2009 on Captured Tracks. Early the following year, he issued split singles with Fair Ohs (on Tough Love) and Mazes (on Love Is Disgusting), both of which featured two of his songs. Later in the year, Jones linked with Slumberland, who issued “7th Date,” a colored 7” single, that June. Though he recorded almost everything by himself, with help from his younger brother on drums, he put together a live band and pu...

Young Magic is releasing their debut album - Melt on Feb 14th on Carpark Records. Although now firmly settled in New York City, Young Magic’s three members came together through equal helpings of openness and fortuity. In 2010, singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel had left his home continent of Australia to travel across Europe, over to New York, and down through Mexico, all the while creating and recording music with whatever instruments he found along the way. While in Mexico, Emmanuel kept a tight correspondence with fellow Australian expat Michael Italia, who for months had been similarly traveling across Europe and South America with portable recording gear in tow. They decided to meet up in New York, where their...

alt-J (∆)’s name takes a little explaining. Pronounced “alt-J”, the delta sign is created when you hold down the alt key on your computer keyboard and punch ‘J’ on a Mac computer. The symbol has a deeper meaning for the band, as guitarist/bassist Gwil Sainsbury notes, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change,” and the band’s relatively new name came at a turning point in their lives. Gwil, Joe Newman [guitar/vocals], Gus Unger-Hamilton [keyboards] and Thom Green [drums] met at Leeds University in 2007. Gus studied English Literature; the other three Fine Art. In their second year of studies, Joe played Gwil a handful ...

Once referred to as “the ultimate stoner rock band,” Sleep evolved in the early 1990s and has exerted a considerable, consistent influence on modern heavy music ever since. The group split in 1997 after the release of two hugely influential albums—Sleep’s Holy Mountain and Dopesmoker—returning triumphantly in 2009 when it performed two UK shows as part of All Tomorrow’s Parties’ (ATP) The Fans Strike Back festival, playing Holy Mountain in its entirety along with selections from Dopesmoker. The rabid fan response to the 2009 shows resulted in a run of U.S. live dates in September 2010 that immediately sold out. In celebrating the band’s return, The New York Times referred to the trio as &ldquo...

Morning Fame is an alternative rock band that defines what happens when four uniquely talented and passionate musicians come together and develop a strong musical chemistry. The band has built its sound around crafting memorable and meaningful songs with the ringing arpeggiated guitar style of Joe Liranzo, the plaintive vocals of Vik Kapur, the intricate drum lines of Al Dennis and the melodic bass lines of Rob Gilberti. Morning Fame's music creates a mood that is perfect for anyone who really "listens" to music rather than enjoys it in the background. In late 2011 the band recorded their first EP titled ‘A Lasting Place’ at the world-renowned Revolution Studios. Due to the great response of th...

Sub Pop Records released their second single Shadow two months later. No one can say they didn’t see these two brats coming! Justice, who’s name the world (well at least that part of the world that loves to dance) chants with emotion and whose first album is awaited with bated breath ever since the French duo revolutionised dancefloors with two radically different hits. First, the housey and uplifting “Never Be Alone" which plunged clubbers into full on hedonism. Then, two years later, the striking and screeching “Waters of Nazareth" that brought darkness onto clubs worldwide with its glitchy rhythms and sombre mood. Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé met three years ago and were both raised in the suburbs of Paris. Xavier was studying graphic design and Gaspard d...

In 2008, after a shared mystical experience in the Far West Texas desert, Bechtolt was joined in the YACHT endeavor by longtime collaborator Claire L. Evans. Spurred by this paranormal bond, this new incarnation of YACHT ...

Smashing through trends and brandishing a savage reminder of what heavy metal is all about, Sweden’s sensational SISTER SIN has most definitely arrived on the scene. An open audition for a band led by former bassist Chris Martensson landed drummer Dave Sundberg not only a new friendship, but blueprints for Sweden’s dirty metal cartel SISTER SIN.  Chris and Dave became fast friends, recognizing their mutual interest in 80’s metal, and their yearning to play the music unconventional to their home country. The pair quickly formed a band of their own in hopes to assault ears all around the world. The search for the pe...

Virginia’s extreme sound nihilists PIG DESTROYER deliver savage grindcore that is both intentionally confrontational and thoroughly pummeling. PIG DESTROYER formed in 1997, when vocalist J.R. Hayes and guitarist Scott Hull decided to unite in their efforts to create utterly destructive grindcore. The trio began rehearsing and immediately found that their common musical interests produced intellige...

The Sea and Cake is a pop/rock supergroup with a pronounced jazz influence, which formed in 1994 in Chicago, Illinois. The group’s name came from a willful reinterpretation (in the wake of an accidental miscomprehension) of The C In Cake, a song by Gastr Del Sol. Starting with 1997’s The Fawn, the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. The band has shied away from releasing singles, preferring the album format. Contrary to his multi-instrumentalist role in Tortoise, John McEntire essentially plays only drums in The Sea and Cake. Finally, in 2000, the Sea and Cake released thei...

Future Islands’ romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio’s most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks – but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC’s historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and...

Nick Peay is a Louisville, KY based singer/songwriter, with over 15 years of songwriting experience.. Over the years, he has been honing his craft of songwriting through practice, schooling and constantly striving for improvement. His new EP, Life & Love & Us is musically different and stronger than other recent projects for two reasons. He used his new-found love of the ukulele to write and record the EP, which features mostly just ukulele, vocals and string arrangements; and these sparse recordings highlight the strength in Peay's songwriting as he approaches more positive material, from falling in love to thankfulness for the wonders of the world. Since picking up the ukulele in late 2010, Peay has not only taught himself how to ...

The Texas Cotton Kings started life as a vision of lead guitarist, Sleepy Jones. His life long love affair with the blues drove him to begin putting the pieces together on a project that evolved into the Texas Cotton Kings. He contacted long time friend, and former band mate on another project, Sarge.Sarge is one of the best drummers in DFW, and his skills are needed to keep time, blast someamazing beats, and keep the house rocking during a Texas Cotton Kings show! Once he was signed on, it was onto bass man, Brian Clark!Brian Clark is also a member of the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra, but his love of the blues had him "Slappin dah bass mon" and he was good to go! Time to move on to the front man. Slee...

Ghostland Observatory’s entire approach to music – sonically, aesthetically, conceptually – is essentially a melding of the two distinctly different personalities of its two members, Thomas Ross Turner and Aaron Behrens. Whereas Turner, the producer/drummer/keyboardist of the duo, finds solace in the minimal, bleak cable-patch squawks of Karlheinz Stockhausen and the analog-disco-thump of Giorgio Moroder, Behrens’ interests lie more along the lines of psychedelia, rock and various country and blues artists. The result is a shimmering, pulsing pop music that is at once kinetically alive with Behrens’ striking vocals and driving guitar work but also anchored firmly by ...

The brainchild of Los Angeles musician Michael Lee, who grew up taking piano lessons and listening to bands like Orbital and the Chemical Brothers, Letting Up Despite Great Faults formed in 2004. After recording a handful of demo tracks, the band released the seven-song EP, Movement, on L.A.'s New Words Records in 2006, earning them accolades in the blogosphere and a song ("Disasters Are Okay") on the television program One Tree Hill. In late 2009, Letting Up Despite Great Faults released their self-titled full-length on New Words, an album Lee recorded in his own home on Ableton Live, a program he had only recently learned. (Though most of the instruments were recorded by Lee himself, for both releases, he utilized the talen...

Formed in 2012 as a side project for Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill and Mona vocalist/guitarist Nick Brown, Smoke & Jackal combines elements of both members' parent groups, with an emphasis on wistful, late night electro-pop. Melodic, provocative, and desperate, the duo released its first single, "No Tell," on August 21, 2012 with plans to release a debut EP, EP No. 1, later that October....
