Horse FeathersBorn and raised in Lewiston, ID, Justin Ringle has a natural affinity with the West.  Its space, beauty, and nonconformity seem to be reflected in the music of his band Horse Feathers, named after an expression he heard his grandfather use. We caught up with Justin to find out some of his favorite albums.

Songs for Beginners – Graham Nash
This one has become a road favorite in the van especially on sunny days. Graham Nash’s voice is a giant selling point but the songs are good from beginning to end. Except for a few questionable moments with saxophone it’s nearly perfect.

Reflections – Pentangle
I’m surprised the first track on this record called “Wedding Dress”
(traditional) hasn’t been sampled like crazy. It’s very folky with the
guitar, banjo, and vocals, yet the rhythm section is approaching a hip hop
groove. I’m not even joking.

The Best of Tim Hardin (Verve)
I like Tim Hardin’s records but love this best of collection. His
voice really does have a unique and beautiful quality. And whenever I listen
I can’t help but think of how sad his story was, how much talent he had, and
how he was originally from Oregon.

The True Story of Abner Jay (Mississippi Records)
Awesome. Like outsider lo-fi soul with some kind of six string banjo. Really interesting relic released by Mississippi Records here in Portland who pretty much make releasing interesting relics their business.

Red Headed Stranger – Willie Nelson
As far as country concept albums go this one must be the best. Willie returns time and time again to the same lyrical and musical motifs making the record seem like it is on repeat within itself or something. Listened to this on a road trip once no less than 50 times in a row.
