The Acorn – I don’t know these folks but I liked their record a lot, enough to order the vinyl version with handmade artwork. That’s rare for me to be that interested in a new band. They do cooool things and seem to be breaking through, so look em up.Christine Fellows – I saw Christine at sxsw last year and it was my favorite show. Intimate, smart, funny and touching, she writes fabulous words and is no musical slouch either.
She’s Canadian so she has an edge. After the show I effused embarrassingly, something else I hardly ever do, and she was real nice.
Euros Childs – He’s from Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, and his solo record is good. Some of the songs are in Welsh, which makes it even more intriguing.
Ray’s Vast Basement – Ray’s Vast Basement is great, and I don’t just say that because I have played on several of their records – Jon Bernson, the RVB mastermind, writes
super-imaginative lyrics and has a filmic musical aesthetic in the way he makes his records. This is serious business I tell you!
Scott Pinkmountain and the Golden Bolts of Tone – Another compadre of mine is the great Scott Pinkmountain – his new record is called The Full Sun and it will scorch you with glorious beauty. Epic songs with doubly-epic large orchestral arrangements make this record seriously stand out, like a tiger in a pack of prairie dogs. Ooh La La.
