The Daredevil Christopher Wright

While The Daredevil Christopher Wright’s debut album, In Deference to a Broken Back, doesn’t dramatize the agonies given them, they do face the weighty issues of cancer, death, and loss with a realistic and offbeat tone. Their joyful music is layered with the profundity of small moments that flavor life. The boys in the band gave us some lovely indie recommendations.

1. Kings of Convenience- Quiet is the New Loud
-This record is so beautifully simple and smart. It is so subtle both Lyrically and musically. These dudes make music along the lines of Simon and Garfunkel if you haven’t heard them. I’ve enjoyed all their records so far but this one just kills me.

2. Pedro the Lion- Control
-We just got to see David Bazan play last night. It was my first time seeing him with a band and it was inspiring. They played Penetration from Control and it was amazing. This guy has written so many good songs.

3. The Danielson Famile- Fetch the Compass Kids
-We were able to catch a Danielson show when we were down in Austin for the SXSW festivities and it was great. Daniel Smith is so inspiring to me in how complete and deep his vision for the art he’s creating is. The Compass Kids record is so great rhythmically and melodically. Their music is so joyful and strange. I love it.

4. David Bowie- Hunky Dory
-This record achieves a balance of compositional complexity and catchiness that is amazing. It is full from beginning to end of great songs.

5. Anais Mitchell- Hadestown
-We’ve gotten to know Anais a little bit recently and got a hold of her new record Hadestown. Its a folk opera based on the story of Orpheus. She got all kinds of great musicians to sing the various roles and it is a pretty astounding record.
