Amid a rough and drama-filled week, The United We Stand festival, sponsored by the Free and Equal Elections Foundation, successfully brought a diverse community full of thought leaders and influential artists together to discuss important political causes recently. Initially unsure of the fest location, I attended a media event on a Friday night which mingled several of the speakers and performers pre-fest. This turned into a nice, chill gathering where I connected with Immortal Technique and Wu Tang’s Cappadonna and gathered more info on the various social issues combining scholars, politicians, artists and fellow journalists such as institutional oppression, corruption, injustice and how to organize to affect change.

Originally scheduled to take place at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, the location abruptly switched to downtown LA’s Belasco but leveraging social networks and websites to overcome confusion and spread the word, enthusiastic fans and future revolutionaries still turned up to rep. Speakers and artists flexibly rolled with the logistical punches during the night as music sets by acts like Wu’s Cappadona and U-God with Sounds of Solidarity, rock band Rooftop Revolutionaries, Immortal Technique with Chino XL and Constant Flow and Public Enemy’s Chuck D, entwined with panels on free media, censorship and chemical food poisoning and privacy invasion. I left further educated and empowered that I, as one person with a small platform, can make a difference.
