It’s not often we review video games around here, but there’s not many video games that are more applicable to our taste’s than Guitar Hero. Many of us were bitten by the buzz when the original Guitar Hero hit the shelves and at the risk of sounding redundant, it’s back and bigger than ever.

Barely beyond 10 years to the day the original Guitar Hero was released, the latest installment arrives with a plethora of changes and upgrades. So we sat down over the holidays and let some family take the first crack at the new game.

New Native/Hardware Features

  • Two non-color coded three button rows
  • True concert and role play footage
  • While the button configuration will provide the largest challenge to first gen GH players the reward and feel of how your fingers flow and play the songs will be more than worth the effort. Hunter, 15, says,

“The tutorial does a great job of getting the player comfortable with the new button configuration”.

Marley, 18, prefers one missing option in particular.

“Song intros are too long and you can’t skip them”.

Still, the stage and concert intros are much sharper and realistic. Yes, we’ll all miss Johnny Napalm, but the pre-show vibe makes you actually feel like you’re about to play to a sell-out crowd at your local arena.

    New Gen Play

  • Online source of new tracks (GHTV)
  • Online competition
  • It was a no-brainer, take the classic attraction of something that swept the video game world and truly intertwine it to the casually connected live platforms of the video gaming world in 2015. Pepper in better graphics and a new button structure and there’s a freshness in GHL that can’t be found in any of the previous versions.

As for the songs, there’s some oldies, goodies and indies in between and that’s just on the software that comes with your $99 purchase, check out GHTV for those connected to the web.

Overall 4 out of 5 stars.
