Industry Tip #1 – How to send PR updates

I haven’t written an editorial piece in a long time because I find myself spending at least 1-2 hours a day sifting through Music Emissions emails now. If you are a publicist you are probably hoping I read every single one of these emails that you send. Not a chance. I’m getting 50-75 emails a day about “Listen to my band” or “Check out this new single”.

Here are some tips to help us poor writers out who have to wade through shitty emails every day.

  1. Please don’t use ALL CAPS for the artist name. I delete these without even opening.
  2. Include an up to date picture of the band but NOT at 300DPI. Make it clickable so that when the image is clicked on the print version is downloaded. I will not wait for bloated images to download and it also bloats my inbox.
  3. Attach an album cover. Again, web optimized that is clickable to a print version.
  4. Don’t attach MP3s BUT do link them. Preferable for us here at Music Emissions please allow us to download the full album. We don’t do single reviews at this site.
  5. Don’t include a bio in the text but do link to a text version of one.
  6. Tell me who this new band sounds like and where they are from
  7. If there are tour dates, include them in the bottom of the email after you tell me why I should care.
  8. Don’t tell me to listen to an album and then only provide a link to stream. I NEED to be able to download. I’m not glued to my computer. I download and then move to my iPhone to listen to in transit.
  9. Only use Youtube if you have videos. Vimeo is blocked by many firewalls (including mine). No need to embed in the email, just provide a link and maybe a small screenshot.
  10. And this is for EVERY email. Just because it’s the third mailing you’ve done about your band (GRRR), please include all of the above. There is a better chance I will post your band on the site.
  11. I don’t care if your band is going to be on Jimmy Kimmel, David Letterman or whatever.

That’s all I can think of. Please, chime in with comments for any other tips you may have.

Remember, you can add bands and albums yourself on Music Emissions.

Took the words out of my mouth D.

Let me echo and prefer you add your artist, album and info. Prepping for a review is agonizing knowing I have to spend 15 minutes downloading, copy, pasting editing and researching your research before I can even listen to the music.

Also, please do not reference links of other review sites reviewing the artist, that does not weigh in on my decision.
