Interview: Chicano Batman’s Bardo Martinez

As soon as I heard “Itotiani” by LA based band Chicano Batman, I needed to hear more. Retro psych surf pop with tinges of soul and bossanova, it’s as if I saw their sign in the cielo and immediately transported to days gone by. Mixing genres, languages and decades, they’ve carved a new lane for Latinos (Nosotros) who don’t linger in boundaries, seeking variety. Always keeping my eye on them in the local LA scene over the past couple of years, they’ve gained new audiences recently opening for Jack White’s sold out tour and will play Coachella in April. It’s obvious “cool blessings” fill the agenda for 2015.

I recently chatted with guitarist, vocalist and keyboardist Bardo Martinez on their way to their next Jack White gig about this opening opportunity (RIP Ikey Owens), his vinyl collection (which I imagined to be awesome), 2015 plans ( scoring a PBS documentary) and how he found out he was going to play Coachella. Listen the soundclips below and follow Chicano Batman on Facebook and Twitter for show and album info!
