In celebration of International Jazz Day and still buzzing from the Art of Cool Fest, I had the pleasure of speaking with duo Gretchen Parlato and Alan Hampton last weekend. Also viewing them live as a pair for the first time, their chemistry onstage is undeniable. Students at the prestigious Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz Performance in NYC, they honed their crafts and Gretchen’s worked with several jazz greats and recently snagged a Best Jazz Vocal Grammy nod last year for her ‘Live In NYC’ album. Alan, who released his sophomore album ‘Origami for the Fire’ in 2014 has also worked with esteemed musicians like Esperanza Spalding, Meshell Ndegeocello and Sufjan Stevens.

In our rain soaked tent, they took a few minutes to chat with us briefly about working with Robert Glasper, Lionel Loueke, whether the category “genre” is obsolete and how they approach their performances. Listen to the soundclip below and visit Gretchen’s site and Alan’s site for tour and music release info!
