Music journalists get hit with a steady helping of press releases every day. For the music fan without that kind of sensory overload, a lot of music news can pass by without being seen. Every Monday, I will weed through and compile a list of some of the most intriguing press releases to come across my virtual desk.

Aly Tadros

Since the release of her most recent LP, The Fits, earlier this year, Aly has gained serious momentum and support, with reviews and praise pouring in from the likes of major tastemakers like Interview Magazine, Paste, American Songwriter, and MTV Buzzworthy, not to mention endorsement deals from both Guild and Fender guitars. Now that she’s spent most of the year touring across the world in support of her sophomore release, Aly is ready to be back in New York City with a summer residency at Rockwood Music Hall and her upcoming show at Joe’s Pub in August – one of her biggest shows yet to date.

In the past four years as a traveling artist, Tadros has played over 700 stages across North America and Europe, venturing as far as Egypt, Turkey, Canada and Mexico. Accompanied by backing vocalists and a string quartet, there’s no denying that Aly’s live show is a hypnotizing and infectious display of her intelligent songwriting and wistful wanderlust, and an event not to be missed.

Palms & Puscifier

Aug. 7, 2013, Jerome, Ariz. – PALMS’ remix of Puscifer’s “The Weaver” is streaming via Noisey ( The full album, accompanied by an interview with Maynard James Keenan, will be streaming via Spin on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Sir Mix-A-Lot’s remix of “Conditions of My Parole” is streaming via Vibe .

All Re-Mixed Up comes on the heels of an incredibly busy period for the electro-rock outfit. The band recently released the seven-song EP Donkey Punch The Night, which features covers of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” (see the video here: ) and Accept’s “Balls To The Wall” as well as new songs “Breathe” and “Dear Brother.”

“All Re-Mixed Up is the continuation of the Puscifer tradition to release alternate versions, reworks, and remixes of what we consider initial thoughts,” explained Maynard James Keenan of the track-for-track re-mixing of 2011’s Conditions of My Parole. “For instance, Carina Round was nervous about how to approach her version of ‘Telling Ghosts.’ Mat Mitchell put her at ease by asking her to think of it as a song half written, advising her to ‘now write the other half.’ It’s extremely liberating in the digital age to approach composing and creating in this manner. Infinite paths to explore, reinterpret, and re-present.”

All Re-Mixed Up track listing and remixers:
1. Monsters (Deconstruct) remixed by Mat Mitchell
2. The Green Valley (Verde River Maestro 507 mix) remixed by Rani Sharone (Stolen Babies)
3. Monsoons (JLE Motorik mix) remixed by Josh Eustis
4. Telling Ghosts (Giorgia O’Queef mix) remixed by Carina Round
5. Horizons (Dream of a Lie remix) by John Fryer (This Mortal Coil)
6. Man Overboard (11AD remix) by Alain Johannes
7. Toma (Burn Out remix) by Five Knives
8. The Rapture (JLE Needs Service mix) by Josh Eustis
9. Conditions of My Parole (F.U.B.A.R. remix) by Sir Mix-A-Lot
10. The Weaver (Virtual Vacuum remix) by PALMS
11. Oceans (Green Mussel Mix) by Zac Rae
12. Tumbleweed (Delusions of Grandeur mix) by The Beta Machine

Puscifer, who are known for their all-encompassing live performances that integrate a variety of on-stage props and pre-recorded video pieces, performed at Coachella 2013, and made their first international outings at Australia’s Soundwave Festival and enthralled South American crowds at Lollapalooza Brazil and Chile.

SOiL’s sixth studio album, WHOLE, will be released August 20 via Pavement Entertainment. It’s the band’s first 100% independent release. “We wanted to call all the shots on this album and, for the first time ever, hold our future in our own hands,” explains bassist Tim King.

“Shine On” is the album’s first single

WHOLE is the first album with original frontman Ryan McCombs since 2004’s RE.DE.FINE (after which he became Drowning Pool’s lead singer). It sees SOiL returning to its classic sound that fans have come to admire, calling it the album “that could have come directly after the SCARS album in 2001.”

Following the release of their first-ever live DVD in 2012, “Re-LIVE-ing The Scars,” SOiL began writing new material and entered the studio in February 2013 with producer Ulrich Wild (Pantera, Breaking Benjamin) to begin recording.

“This was by far the most comfortable and natural recording process we have ever experienced,” says guitarist Adam Zadel. “From the writing, pre-production, and through the main tracking and mixing, everything was smooth and fluid.”

Songs featured on WHOLE include “The Hate Song,” “Loaded Gun,” “Way Gone,” and “Shine On,” which is dedicated to the SOiL fans for standing by the band throughout the years. Another track, “Amalgamation,” sees McCombs taking song titles from both the SOiL and Drowning Pool releases he was a part of and weaving them into verses of the song.

“I think lyrically speaking, those that are familiar with the work I’ve done are going to get the next chapter that they would expect,” Ryan McCombs describes about the lyrical process. “Words from a heart and mind that has lived them. One of the greatest things I experience as a lyricist is when people come up and share with me how a song, or a specific verse or line from a song, got them through a hard time or times in their lives. It reminds me of the times music did that for me and how powerful music and/or a lyric can be in a person’s life.”

Drums and percussion on WHOLE were performed by Will Hunt (Black Label Society, Evanescence, Device). “Will added a whole new dimension to the songs,” states bassist Tim King. “He added a monstrous and aggressive vibe to the album.” A guest guitar solo on “Wake Up” was also performed by longtime friend, Mike Mushok of the band Staind.

In touring news, SOiL will hitting the road on June 19 for a show in Bowling Green, KY at The Rustic Room along with Pop Evil. The band is currently lining up shows for the entire summer, which will be announced in the coming weeks. One of the upcoming tour stops includes an appearance as part of the second annual Monster Energy’s Aftershock Festival on September 15 in Sacramento, CA at Discovery Park, along with Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, Megadeth, Volbeat, A Day To Remember, HIM, Buckcherry, Halestorm, Asking Alexandria, All That Remains, Falling In Reverse, Device, Steel Panther, P.O.D., and many others.

Track listing for WHOLE:
1. Loaded Gun
2. The Hate Song
3. Ugly
4. Way Gone
5. Psychopath
6. Shine On
7. Wake Up
8. Amalgamation
9. My Time
10. Little Liar
11. One Love

Kings of Leon

Apparently “Supersoaker” received a deservingly ‘lukewarm’ reception, cause KOL is now promoting a different single off Mechanical Bull, their new album due next month. It’s a bit tastier indeed, but still nothing to write home about.

Miss May I

Troy, OH metal act Miss May I will head into the studio on August 14th with Terry Date (Pantera, White Zombie, Deftones) to begin work on their fourth studio album, the follow up to 2012’s At Heart, which hit #32 on the Billboard Top 200 in its first week. The album will be mixed by Colin Richardson (Machine Head, As I Lay Dying) and is currently slated for a spring 2014 release on Rise Records.

Bassist Ryan Neff, says, “Miss May I has been a wild ride for all of us since the beginning. From starting out in a basement in a small Ohio town, listening to our favorite bands, and just trying to play shows, all the way up to now, about to record our fourth full length album. As a long time fan, I am ecstatic to announce that we will be working with Terry Date on our next record. Growing up jamming Deftones, White Zombie, and Pantera, it’s a dream come true to be working with the man who helped capture some of their greatest work. As if that wasn’t amazing enough, we have Colin Richardson in to mix the record who is also a legend in the metal world. So you can all expect some heavy riffage coming your way next year!”
Miss May I will follow up their recently wrapped stint as direct support on Killswitch Engage’s North American with another direct support slot on Five Finger Death Punch’s The Wrong Side of Heaven Tour, which starts September 17 in Medford, OR and runs through October 27.

ZZ Ward

August 6, 2013 (Burbank, CA) – After a successful run with “Put The Gun Down,” off her full-length album Til The Casket Drops, ZZ Ward recently debuted her new single, “365 Days” with a rousing performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The song (written by Ward) showcases her soulful voice, keyboard prowess and echoes a sentiment of empowerment as a bad relationship fizzles, making the song not only relatable but a fan favorite. The video, which shows a poised Ward as the relationship spirals (literally) to its end, can be seen here:

zzwardyearcoverIt’s been a whirlwind 365 days for ZZ as she’s gone from an underground mixtape to critically acclaimed album release, sold out tours, appearances on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Last Call with Carson Daly and given buzzworthy performances at SXSW, Firefly, Wakarusa and Sasquatch, sharing the stage with the likes of The Lumineers, Kendrick Lamar, Vampire Weekend, and more. Not to mention, ZZ designed her own line of fedoras for Broner hats and saw her music featured in Nashville, Pretty Little Liars, The Voice and We’re The Millers.

Later this month ZZ will continue her summer coast-to-coast run performing at Live On The Green, the Harley Davidson Festival, Bumbershoot and Music on the Half Shell in Roseburg, OR where she was raised — a true homecoming moment for ZZ who once sold her CD’s in the parking lot at the local mall. The summer run will be followed by the kick-off of her fall headline tour, The Down and Dirty Shine Tour 2013 (dates below.)

An eclectic and innovative performer, ZZ’s mix of backporch blues and gritty hip-hop beats has been resonating with both fans and critics alike. Said the New York Times recently, “[ZZ Ward’s] energy evokes Tina Turner’s, her chops Aretha Franklin’s, and her soul Etta James’s,” while the Village Voice notes, “Ward’s voice…stands alone like a force of nature.”

Naked and Famous

New Zealand quintet The Naked and Famous has premiered a new video for their first single ‘Hearts Like Ours’ on VEVO. Taken from their recently announced sophomore album, In Rolling Waves, the song was introduced to the world by Zane Lowe last week as the Hottest Record In The World Today by BBC Radio 1 and quickly caught on worldwide, going #1 on Hype Machine overnight. The video for ‘Hearts Like Ours’ is directed by Campbell Hooper, of Special Problems, who has previously made videos for Young Blood and Punching in a Dream with creative partner, Joel Kefali. In Rolling Waves, will be released via Republic on September 17th, 2013. Pre-order the album here.

In Rolling Waves follows the band’s lauded debut Passive Me, Aggressive You. With global sales of over 500,000, the album spawned a US Gold single, ‘Young Blood,’ and took the band’s YouTube and Vevo views beyond 25 million. Praised by the NME, it was “A classic case of lovely and beautiful: TNAF’s passive melodicism and aggressive innovation clash in a dazzling blaze of psych/sonic fireworks” and Rolling Stone magazine described ‘Young Blood’ as one of the year’s “best singles.”

Fronted by Alisa Xayalith (vocals/keyboards) and Thom Powers (guitar/vocals), The Naked and Famous lit a fire under an online fan base, with a video subculture built through YouTube and into radio. M83 invited TNAF to remix a single and a Tiesto remix transformed ‘Young Blood’ into a club smash. Agencies fell into The Naked and Famous slipstream, and theirs became the go-to soundtrack for gaming, Hollywood and TV shows mining a zeitgeist of young and interesting. Twelve months previously, the band, including David Beadle (bass guitar), Jesse Wood (drums) and Aaron Short (keyboards), had been writing and recording songs in bedrooms on Auckland’s North Shore.

By June 2012, The Naked and Famous had played to more than 600,000 people in 24 countries, but the band chose to hit pause and embark on a second album. After two years of near-constant touring, the New Zealand five-piece set up home in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles to begin work on the twelve track album. The resulting album, In Rolling Waves, produced by Powers and Short, along with Justin Meldal-Johnsen (M83, Beck and NIN) with co-production on two tracks, delivers darkly nuanced, intricately rocking electro gems once again born in bedroom studio sessions, then demoed in studios in Wales and Australia ahead of recording at Sunset Sound in Hollywood.

In 2013, The Naked And Famous are matured and determined to deliver new music to their fans as soon as possible. The band will commence a North American tour in late September before heading to Europe and arriving in the UK late November. Dates below.

Campfire OK

Deeply rooted in Seattle, Campfire OK announces the release of their sophomore album, When You Have Arrived through Fugitive Records on September 17th and will feature “Wishing You The Best” as the first single. The essence of the 12 track alternative album establishes a dark psychedelia sound with unassailable harmonies and catchy melodies.

WATCH: Official Video for “Wishing You The Best”

Campfire OK delivers a unique sound that the band so proudly claims as their own swiftly entering the Seattle music scene by performing at festivals such as Doe Bay, Bumbershoot, and The Capitol Hill Block Party.

Track Listing:
1. 2&3
2. My Dear Friends
3. Wishing You The Best
4. Fireworks at Night
5. New Tradition
6. Pretty and Kind
7. Whereabouts
8. Orange Grove
9. Wooden Queen (feat. Melodie Knight)
10. When You Have Arrived
11. Smoke Out Your Eyes (feat. Melodie Knight)
12. Our Hearts Beat Light (To An Orange Grove)

Campfire OK consists of Mychal Cohen (vocals/piano/guitar), Andrew Eckes (banjo/guitar/trumpet), Brandon Milner (drummer), Aaron Huffman (bassist, formerly with Harvey Danger), and Zarni De Wet (vocals and piano). The songs from the album, When You Have Arrived present themselves in a sprightly, electro-pop manner, some tracks introducing romantic and vulnerable lullabies, while others dance between rhythmic intonations.

The Melvins

Aug. 5, 2013 – The Melvins are set to release Tres Cabrones, a 12-song release that finds Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover reuniting with original drummer Mike Dillard, on Nov. 5 via Ipecac Recordings.

“Tres Cabrones is as close as we’re willing to get to the Melvins 1983 line-up,” explained Osborne. “The best part is it’s all new songs. I specifically wrote tunes that would be good for these guys to play and it worked out great. We had no interest in rehashing tunes we wrote 30 years ago and chose instead to simply create NEW songs. It worked out perfectly.”melvinsnewcover

“Making the Tres Cabrones record was a real treat indeed. It’s a trip down memory lane complete with debauchery and ultra violence, ” said Dillard, who left the band in 1984 only to be replaced by Crover.

“After 30 years we release a record with the (almost) original line-up of the band,” added Crover. “I’ve always felt that drummer Mike Dillard was one of us. It’s great that he’s still a piece of the puzzle! Plus, I get to see what it’s like being the bass player in the Melvins! Tres Cabrones indeed!”

The Melvins annexed Big Business band members Coady Willis and Jared Warren in 2006 for (A) Senile Animal and the quartet has remained in this incarnation for four additional releases including Everybody Loves Sausages, a covers album released this spring. Not ones to relax, the Melvins introduced Melvins Lite, a version of the band that teams Osborne and Crover with Trevor Dunn (Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle). Melvins Lite released their debut album, Freak Puke, in 2012 and subsequently embarked on a 51 date/51 State (including DC) tour of the United States.

The Melvins are currently in the midst of their 30th Anniversary Tour in their ongoing four-piece iteration (father-to-be Jared Warren is on paternity leave with Butthole Surfers’ bass player Jeff Pinkus filling in). The band plays The Loft at Center Stage in Atlanta this evening.
