On Monday night I had the pleasure of seeing one of country music’s best songwriters, Lucinda Williams. She really put on a great show proving that not only is she a great songwriter but fantastic performer as well.
The band that opened up was an instrumental band called Buick 6. They played for quite a while playing some originals as well as some clever covers: “Black Dog” and “Cinamon Girl” were two that really stood out. Then when it was time for Lucinda Williams to come out and the guitarist from Buick 6 came out with her. Then I realized this was the infamous Doug Pettibone and Buick 6 is actually the band backing up Lucinda. They were even better with Lucinda fronting them. Lu tended to pull a lot of material from her album World Without Tears, a couple from Essence, a couple earlier ones and a lot from her fantastic new album, Little Honey. At one moment she apologized for using the “F Word” but then justified it by saying that the world is all messed up and that a few Fucks here and there were harmless compared to what’s going on in the world.
Overall, Lucinda put on a fantastic show. At first I thought that she didn’t seem comfortable. She came off very shy and insecure but after she warmed up to the crowd and the wonderful room at the Jack Singer Concert Hall she was even more entertaining. I would highly recommend a Williams show if she ever comes to your town. Thanks to John over at Take Out Marketing for hooking me up with tickets.
