Do you leave your computer on idle overnight?

The Scene: I’m heading over to a ‘friends’ house for the evening.
My roomate Eddie says: “Bro you gonna turn off your computer?”
Brian says: “Friends in the past have always told me it takes more energy for a computer to reboot than it would to boot back up from hibernation.”…
And then I read this report
http://www.1e.com/energycampaign/index.aspx
-”For example, if all the world’s 1 billion PC’s were powered down for just one night – it would save enough energy to light up New York City’s Empire State Building – inside and out – for more than 30 years”
30 YEARS!!!!!!! Perhaps we should all boot down a bit more from time to time.

For the most part, hibernation/sleep is a big energy saver. But yeah, if we shut down at night it would save a hell of a lot of power. I get ticked because at my 9-5 job most people leave their computers powered up all weekend. No reason, just so that they can jump right in first thing on Monday. If you have an Apple, you can program it to go to sleep and wake up at a specific time. Very cool. Turn everything off that you don’t use.
Yeah, I hate that too. Linux has good power management apps available like the Apple tools, which makes me happy.
I’ve got mine set to hibernate after about 30 minutes and I shut mine down if I’m going to be away for more than a couple of hours. My wife on the other hand…
I rarely shut down and trust in sleep mode to save me power. Perhaps that’ll change now…
Always shut it down after I’m done. It only takes a few minutes to start back up again, I’m never in that big of a hurry where I need to get on the computer RIGHT at a particular time. Why not save energy? It’s like saying I leave the water running in the shower when I’m done so that I don’t have to turn it back on again the next day..
damn I guess i should power off my computers every once in a while
thanks Brian!
