Cornershop are back with an great new album called Judy Sucks a Lemon For Breakfast. Seriously, their best effort to date!
Ben Ayres from Cornershop chooses obscure picks that he and Tjinder Singh recommend you find:
1. The Barcelona Pavilion – ‘It’s The Barcelona Pavilion!’
This is actually an EP, but well worth checking out, we loved this so much we put it out on our own label. The group were from Toronto and featured some past and present members of The Hidden Cameras, they only ever released about 3 singles. John Peel loved this EP and got them to do a session, members of Belle & Sebastian, Franz Ferdinand and Blur were all huge fans, in fact Graham Coxon slept outside the venue in order to catch their first UK show. And to top it all, they had only 2 bassists, drum machine and vocals! Almost the definition of a cult band.
2. The Strange Boys – ‘The Strange Boys And Girls Club’
One of the best new bands around, they are from Texas and they sound like they could be from any place in time from the last 50 years. I love the way they’ve taken the blues and r&b and given it their own great update. An incredible guitarist is at work here too, beware; Johnny Marr is apparently a fan. Track 5, ‘This Girl Taught Me A Dance’ is enough to make anyone do a new dance.
3. Jeffrey Lewis – The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane & Other Favourites’
Jeffrey is so under-rated it’s incredible. He’s a genius. He’s also a phenomenal comic book maker, check out his ‘Fuff’ series… This, his debut album is incredible, one of those albums that marked the arrival of a huge talent.
4. Tappa Zukie – M.P.L.A.
We’ve always loved Tappa Zukie, his voice and vocal delivery are spot on, always loved the sense of urgency he conveys. This classic early roots reggae album’s title track contains one of the heaviest basslines ever laid down by man. Many other gems on this too and the whole record shows Tappa in great form in the year 1976.
5. Huggy Bear – ‘Taking The Rough With The Smooch’
We used to play shows with Huggy Bear in the early days and it was always exciting. The early shows we played with them were never less than incendiary. We once got escorted out of the channel 4 Word television programme studios with them after their legendary performance and subsequent heckling of the host… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfP5HNvsWAo . This compilation of the first two EPs is pure genius and the tracks are still breathtaking in their imagination, energy and attitude.
