Young the Giant and MTV hosted a contest inviting fans to be audience members for the taping of MTV Unplugged. I have been to one of these intimate events before for Lykke Li, so I knew this was a must attend event. I arrived promptly an hour before check in time. At 2pm, they cattled us into a huge warehouse where we would continue to wait for another hour and a half. Finally, they let us into the studio, and I secured a decent 2nd row seat. The blue lights illuminated on the hanging ropes that were twined with holiday lights behind the band’s equipment.
Young the Giant came on stage and we were signaled to clap and cheer. Lead vocalist, Sameer, smiled at the crowd and jokingly smirked at the cameras right before he went into ‘Apartment’. He continued to thank the crowd and introduced his band and additional drummer. ‘I Got’ and ‘Cough Syrup’ were next. Sameer switched to the piano for “Strings“, as well as adding a cello and violinist for a few songs. For the last song, Young the Giant covered Gorillaz‘ “Empire Ants” with a string quartet. You could tell that there were guitar issues, so they had to perform the song again. No complaints here! I am very excited to see this on MTV!
