Spread the word

What other band could be accused of causing an earthquake? Foo Fighters were playing a show in New Zealand last week, and that’s exactly what happened! According to an earthquake monitoring blog based there called GeoNet, the 50,000 fans gathered for the show caused enough force from jumping and dancing to literally cause the earth beneath them to move.

It happened on December 13th in Auckland. In the blog’s own words, “The concert vibrations were recorded as a semi continuous harmonic signal with a peak osculation of 3Hz, i.e. the ground was shaking 3 times per second in a nice rhythmic motion.” These were real, geological tremors caused by the sound waves from both the band and the crowd. These type of volcanic aren’t all that uncommon, especially during a soccer game, sports event, or concert.

Foo Fighters, who have reunited with Germs guitar player Pat Smear, are currently on a world tour. Their documentary, Back And Forth, debuted this year at SXSW in Austin. Their newest record, Wasting Light, has earned them six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.  They also had a special promotional contest sponsored by Blackberry, in which fans could win a performance in their own garage. There is a video clip below.
